"I never practiced Tai Chi with the intention of looking to fight. I learned the form...[and] some push hands, and then I started competing in push hands. My plan has always been to learn how to be as great as my father."

When she was a little girl, Chen did ballet and took hula dancing lessons, in addition to swimming and gymnastics, at the early age of 5. She also competed as a figure skater and won three gold medals at a regional competition at age 11.
