Kali Uchis Supports Gay Rights and Has Gay Family Members

Is Kali Uchis Gay? The singer, known for supporting gay rights and having gay family members, is reportedly bisexual and aspires to be a role model for her primarily female and LGBTQ+ fan base.

Kali Uchis is a Spanish American singer, songwriter, and producer who has made a name for her diverse music-making style. Her genre-crossing tunes have earned multiple awards following her collaborations with fellow industry stars such as Tyler, The Creator, Gorillaz, and Daniel Caesar.

She became an instant fan-favorite following the self-release of her EP "Por Vida" in 2015, which also saw the singer sign to a record label. By 2018, Kali Uchis had released her second project, "Isolation," and received two Grammy Award nominations.

More recently, Uchis' success landed her a spot in the lineup for Coachella, during which the "Fue Mejor" singer turned the music festival into a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community after advocating for gay rights. Uchis revealed that she was raised to be accepting of all people and has carried that ethos into her adult years and her career.

Kali Uchis Supported Gay Rights on the Coachella Stage

In 2023, Uchis was one of the multiple artists who took the stage at Coachella—including Bad Bunny and Frank Ocean. However, during her performance, the singer pointed to fans waving Pride flags in the crowd during an instrumental section of her single hit "Telepatía" and shouted, "Gay rights! We see the gay flags over there, gay rights."

Over the years, the musician has been very open about supporting gay people. Uchis revealed that she not only encouraged her fans to embrace themselves but also tried to set a positive example for them. Uchis said:

"Most of my fan base is girls and gays. I always try to be as much of a positive role model as I can. Anyone who looks up to me I try to just show them to be themselves. It's important to be able to express the parts of you that are human."

Kali Uchis Has a Lot of Gays in Her Family

Uchis was surrounded by multiple family members who were gay growing up, from her aunts and uncles to her cousins. The singer's support of the gay community also stemmed from her father's advocacy for gay rights.

She revealed that although her dad is straight, he used to take her to gay protests, proudly wore the pride flag, and was "so happy" when gay marriage was legalized.

During an interview, Uchis recalled not understanding why people would try to tell others what to do with their sexuality. However, the singer admitted to seeing great strides toward's acceptance in today's society and shared:

"Now, straight people are so much more accepting, and they can finally look up to and admire a gay, lesbian, or trans artist. That's what is so special about the time we're in now... it's really nice that people feel connected to each other..."

Uchis added that the younger generation had found pride in each other's individuality and the strength to be authentic. "I think that's always been really important, and I've never seen it as strong as it is today," she noted.

Growing up, Uchis was a massive fan of George Michael—because people often thought her father resembled the later singer—and drew inspiration from other artists who were "fluid with their sexuality," such as Prince and David Bowie.

Kali Uchis was last romantically linked to American rapper, singer, and songwriter Don Toliver. However, according to reports, the singer is bisexual, joining other powerful women such as Miley Cyrus on the list of influential performers who are proudly part of the LGBTQ+ community. "It's sad that back in the day, artists hid their sexuality for a while," Uchis said.
