Parker and Broderick Struggled to Conceive

The actress and Broderick met in 1992 when the "Godzilla" star was directing Parker's brother Toby's one-act play.

Broderick called Parker for a date, and they went out. Their relationship started after this date, and they lived together for five years before getting married in 1997.

They welcomed their first child nearly five years after they tied the knot. Broderick was 40 and Parker 37 when their first child James Wilke Broderick was born on October 28, 2002, weighing 6 lbs. and 8 oz.

The couple's son was named in memory of Broderick's late father, James Broderick, an actor who starred in the 1970s TV series, "Family."

Parker and her 61-year-old husband wanted to have more kids after they welcomed their first child, but that proved difficult. They struggled to conceive another child.

The actress, who grew up as one of eight siblings, had a deep desire to give her first child a sibling. She reasoned, they were "older parents" and she "didn't want him [James] to have to shoulder the burden of us later in life—by himself."

The "Sex and the City" star revealed they "tried and tried and tried and tried" to give James a sibling or more, but she concluded:

"It just was not to be, the conventional way—I would give birth as often as I could, if I could. I cherished all the milestones, the good and the bad."

Parker never revealed the fertility issues she and her husband faced. However, they went through IVF, which was also unsuccessful. The couple then explored a variety of ways to expand their family, including surrogacy.

The 58-year-old and her husband eventually chose to use a surrogate, Michelle Ross, to carry another child for them. For so long, the pair struggled to keep it a secret from the public.

Parker and Broderick Became "Older Parents" of Twin Girls

Parker and Broderick were excited when they found out their surrogate was pregnant with twins. The couple welcomed twin girls in June 2009.

The actress noted that meeting her kids instead of giving birth to them was a different experience. She described the feeling as the world going silent, and all she could see was the blankets the twins were wrapped in, their faces, and her husband's and son's faces:

"It's literally as if sound is sucked from the room. Time stands still. It's so different, and equally extraordinary. I am very poor at describing it. But it's amazing."

After the twin girls were born, the actress and her husband released a statement that said they were delighted to announce the healthy arrival of their twin daughters.

They revealed that the babies were doing beautifully well and that the entire family was over the moon at their arrival. The twin girls were born at 3:58 p.m. Marion Loretta Elwell, weighed 5 lbs., 11 oz, while Tabitha Hodge Broderick weighed 6 lbs.

The twins are now in their teens. In 2022, they appeared with their mother and father at the premiere of "Hocus Pocus 2." The girls looked stunning and have become fashionistas wearing their mother's SJP collection peep-toe heels. Marion was in a shimmering strapless cocktail dress, while Tabitha was wearing a black peasant-style mini-dress.

The "Failure to Launch" star revealed that the girls had adopted their own styles, interests, and personalities that she sometimes forgets they are twins. She added:

"They're really devoted to each other, but they'll also say, I need time away from her. Tabitha can play by herself for hours. Loretta always needs to be checking in. They go to different schools. That's Tabitha's idea."

Parker admitted that sometimes she just sits on the stairs at home and listens to the conversations her kids are having in the kitchen. She is always so charmed by their discussions and happy at the young man her son was turning into.

When it comes to making decisions about how to raise their children, Parker said she and Broderick have conversations about it.
