In a candid sit down with Cosmopolitan in August 2021, Lee Rodriguez shared her experience since the onset of her character's queer storyline in "Never Have I Ever." Despite anticipating some speculation about her sexuality, the actress did not expect to reveal her true sexuality to others constantly.

After the last episode of the show's first season, where Fabiola comes out as a lesbian, DMs poured in on Lee Rodriguez's social media, with fans inquiring how she labeled herself. But, much to her own surprise, she was stumped.

Is Lee Rodriguez Gay? The Actress Has No Specific Label

After numerous fans expressed their curiosity worldwide, Rodriguez pondered how she identified sexuality-wise. Although she understood it was ultimately her choice to come out, she felt pressured by the constant inquiry.

In the interim of figuring herself out, the young star said she considered keeping her sexual orientation to herself. However, people began making assumptions based on her dating history, which she did not appreciate. The actress also noted:

"I knew it was going to be a thing when taking on the role of Fabiola, and I was prepared for that because it's not okay for straight actors to take queer roles."

Rodriguez added that she wouldn't have taken the role of Fabiola if she was straight. Eventually, she made it official on 2020's National Coming Out Day, calling herself a "proud queer." Before then, she had time to tell her family and to get used to saying, "Oh, I'm queer," out loud.

Lee Rodriguez's Romantic Storylines as Fabiola in 'Never Have I Ever'

Fabiola's first girlfriend, Eve, is introduced in Season 2. She comes amid Fabiola's struggle to find her feet as a newly-out lesbian, learning about queer pop culture, especially things like the singer King Princess and the 2000s series "The L Word," which stars Jennifer Beals and Katherine Moennig.

After Eve relocates to South Korea in Season 3, Fabiola moves on to Addison, a non-binary friend of Devi's. Through these romances, the show goes beyond "coming out" and how things don't immediately make sense once one does; Rodriguez relates to her character that way.

Interestingly, she said she related more to Devi in the first and second seasons. "[...] Just how much of a mess she was, and a lot of that secondhand embarrassment I got from her. I saw myself in her a lot," Rodriguez reflected.

Lee Rodriguez's Dating Life Remains Private

Rodriguez has yet to share anything about her dating history. Still, the actress developed close friendships with her castmates, which include Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ramona Young, Megan Suri, Darren Barnet, and Christina Carter.

"I hang out with them a lot. But honestly, everybody in the cast, I'm really close with. We all just live in different places," she recently shared. Rodriguez added that they even have a group chat, and it's "always a blast" whenever they get together.
