- John Amos tells the story behind the "elder abuse" accusations.
- His daughter, Shannon Amos, claimed he was being abused by a caregiver and asked for donations.
- The star and his daughter seemed to have a great bond, and she appeared to have a fruitful and budding career.
On June 15, 2023, K.C. Amos, John Amos' son, took to his Instagram account to share a video of his father speaking about the abuse claims brought by his daughter, Shannon Amos. In the post's caption, K.C. noted different factors to their father's situation.
He also found it interesting that people had made conclusions while he and his family still discovered new things daily. In the clip, John, 83, was seen lying in a hospital bed as he and his son spoke to someone on the phone.

It seemed they were talking to someone about getting legal representation to tackle the matter, with the actor telling his side of the story by revealing to the person on the other line that he had two children, and one was with him at that moment. He noted how he was in a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital but wasn't there because of something that happened recently.

The "Good Times" actor explained that a month ago, he was hospitalized for water retention and other problems, which were addressed. John said he had capable doctors and medical staff attending to him, all of which were organized by K.C., and then tackled what had led to the call saying before he was admitted:
"I had some ongoing issues with my daughter, who I feel has taken advantage of me."
The star said Shannon was the "primary suspect" of his "elderly abuse" before the video cut out. The footage came about a week ago after his daughter claimed someone else was abusing her father and asked people to donate to assist him.
Why Does John Claim That His Daughter Lied?
On June 8, 2023, Shannon shared a throwback Instagram picture of her posing with her famous father. She first recalled a "cherished" video she and John made in November 2022, saying they didn't know the challenges they would face.
Shannon said on May 14, 2023, she was called by her distressed father, who revealed he was hospitalized in Memphis and was in great pain. The actor's only daughter shared how she was out of the country and arranged help for him, with the intensive care unit (ICU) allegedly noting how her father was "hanging by a thread."
She said the past two weeks had shattered their lives, with her father becoming a "victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation." John's daughter claimed she and her family worked with local authorities and the Colorado Bureau of Investigations to bring the criminals to justice.
The celebrity's daughter felt her father needed legal assistance to enable him to prosecute the criminals and protect his future. She claimed his home had been robbed, and he had no safe space to return and asked people to donate on a GoFundMe account she created to assist.
Shannon alleged that the funds would go to her father's trust for his legal fees and aftercare before ending her post by giving the impression that she was speaking on behalf of the family. On the same day her post went up, John, also known as "America's Dad," reportedly told TMZ that his daughter was lying.
The "Me Time" star said he wasn't fighting for his life, and no one was abusing him, and he didn't know why she opened a GoFundMe for him. His representative, Belinda Foster, corroborated John's story when she revealed he was hospitalized because his lower body and abdomen had filled with fluid.
Foster shared how the diagnosis had caused issues with her client's heart, but doctors were luckily able to drain it all, and he'd started feeling more like himself. In Shannon's fundraiser, she set a goal of $500,000, with her claiming he was a victim of a "caregiver" who stole anything valuable from his home.
By June 16, 2023, over $13,200 had been raised, with 326 people donating and one person giving $1,000! The turn of events was shocking as it seemed Shannon was quite close to John.
The Bond John Had with His Daughter and Who She Was
Before all the drama, things seemed peaceful and happy with the Amos family. On April 3, 2023, Shannon shared a TikTok video on Instagram of her in a different location as she sang with her brother and father, who were together.
The actor's daughter revealed how she missed her father "terribly" that day as they lived in different countries. She believed they had to create memorable moments as a family and make their loved ones aware they were in their thoughts.
Shannon described herself as a "Daddy's girl," she said adored her family, with whom she was grateful for each moment they spent together, whether it was up close or from far away. She confessed that there was something about John that was special, noting how he had been her rock through the good and bad times, supportive, gave guidance, and listened, before adding:
"I can't imagine my life without him."
"The West Wing" star was credited for being an uncontested storyteller with a sense of humor before noting how they'd had their fair share of challenges but that John was a teddy bear at his core. K.C.'s sister felt blessed to call him her father.

Then addressing him directly, she told him she loved him, he meant the world to her, and she was grateful for all he did. To her family, she said thank you for being there no matter what before declaring her love.
John also seemed to love his daughter dearly, and in December 2015, he shared a Facebook post of them posing together and declared that she would always be his "beautiful baby girl." in October 2022, Shannon and her father shared a "precious moment" when they danced together on a porch to Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father."
The father-daughter pair appeared quite close during that touching moment. According to Shannon's LinkedIn account, she was the CEO of the Sumanah Retreat Company and worked as a speaker and a retreat leader.
The "Coming to America" star's daughter also worked on empowering marginalized communities and women through holistic health, mindfulness, integration, and psychedelic retreats. She also described herself as a DEIA advocate, a neurodiversity champion, and someone who worked on amplifying BIPOC voices.
Her IMDb account revealed she was born in New Jersey to John, who was African-American and Ghanaian, and Noel Jean Mickelson, who was Ashkenazi Jewish and a descendant of Eastern Europe. Shannon grew up around acting sets because of her father.
Her father took her to manager, agent, and attorney meetings where he wished for her to listen and learn the business side of the entertainment industry. After finishing high school, K.C.'s sister interned for Spike Lee on one of his movies, and her life changed in her college freshman year when she was offered a production assistant job for MTV.
She once worked as a segment producer on "America's Most Wanted" and then got hired as a producer for BET before becoming a show creator and director of original programs. After BET was sole in 2002, she relocated to Los Angeles and started producing music videos for big stars.
Shannon later became an executive producer for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and ultimately opened her talent management and production company. John's daughter allegedly produced digital and television content and managed several YouTubers besides the work she now did.
