Sade Adu's Child: Izaak Theo Adu-Watts Finds Supportive Wife amid Gender Transition

Sade Adu's son, Izaak Theo Adu-Watts, went through the trying process of coming into his true identity as a transgender man. The model had his parents' and friends' full support throughout his journey, and his openness about it led to him finding love.

Sade's child, Izaak Theo Adu-Watts, has always been forthcoming about his gender identity and the emotional and physical process of realizing it. His honesty made his online platforms a safe space for other transgender people who needed support.

Many congratulated the singer's son for being true to himself in a world that fought against his freedom of expression at every turn. Among those people was the woman who would become his wife, Emily Shakeshaft, now Mrs. Emily Adu-Watts.

Izaak Theo Adu-Watts' Transition Wasn't Easy

In May 2019, Izaak shared a screenshot of a reflection he'd written about the difficulties of being transgender. "You are constantly fighting for the world to accept you, and sometimes you even fight yourself," he lamented.

He listed other challenges but noted that he had a supportive family — like Hari Nef, Zaya Wade, and Jaya Kelly — that saw him for who he was inside. In light of many transgender people lacking such a support system, he invited them to talk via his DMs.

In July 2019, he posted another reflection on how "painful" and wholly "exhausting" his transition was. He admitted to sometimes questioning why he had to endure so much only to live in his desired form. Still, he accepted the journey and was determined to see it through.

Izaak Theo Adu-Watts Found Love Amid His Transition

Emily and Izaak first started talking on Instagram in May 2019. She had contacted Izaak to congratulate him. Although they were strangers at the time, she said, "I was so proud of him fighting so hard to get to where he is now."

They communicated consistently from that point forward, through text and FaceTime, until they planned to meet in Fresno, California, that November. Izaak flew from London and essentially moved in with Emily.

Emily was born in Fresno. She is an artist and a hairdresser. She and Sade's son got engaged in May 2020, and they tied the knot in Hawaii the following year, on April 16. Throughout their relationship, they have loved each other loudly, frequently sharing appreciation posts for one another.

Sade Has Stayed By Her Son's Side

Izaak often posts photos of his mom, including recent pictures and some from his childhood, expressing his gratitude for her support. In September 2019, alongside a photo of him and Sade (previously married to Carlos Scola Pliego) embracing, he wrote:

"Thank you for staying by my side these past 6 months Mumma. Thank you for fighting with me to complete the man I am. Thank you for your encouragement when things are hard, for the love you give me. The purest heart. I love you so much. Queen of queens [...]."

He shared another tribute in April 2020, calling Sade his inspiration. Izaak also has a loving relationship with his mother's partner, Ian Watts. The young model even took Ian's last name to honor the role he played in his life as a father figure.
