Reeves was already rising through the Hollywood ranks at a tremendous pace as a young man, but when people found out about his scarred past, the actor became something of a cultural phenomenon. Reeves' father left the family shortly after escaping from Beirut's civil war in the 70s. Although the family fled together, Reeves's dad, Samuel Nowlin Reeves, went his own way before the family settled in Toronto.

Reeves stopped talking to his father when he was about 13, and by 1994, Samuel was arrested in Hawaii for trying to sell large quantities of heroin and cocaine. He was eventually sentenced to ten years in prison. The last time Reeves saw his father, they played in the surf on Hawaii's Big Island. Reeves was around 11.

Reeves's Choice Not to Reconcile with His Dad

Reeves has freely shared his experiences of growing up without a father, admitting that not having his dad in his life has affected him in many ways. Nonetheless, the actor has largely made peace with the fact that his dad chose a different life over being with his family and raising his two children.

While the 2020 Academy Awards played host to various stylish and famous couples, Reeves opted to bring someone much closer to him as his date.

Reeves spoke about his relationship with his father, admitting, "No, the story with me and my dad's pretty heavy. It's full of pain and woe." Reeves also confessed that he hadn't rekindled his relationship with his dad, choosing instead to stick to his life as it is. He also shared his view on the trouble his dad got into.

Reeves shared that although he has heard of a few run-ins his dad had with the law, he generally doesn't pay much attention to what the older Reeves is getting up to. Despite this and his unwillingness to reconnect with his dad, Reeves wished the old man well, commenting in his usual stoic manner:

"Has there been a lot of [trouble]? I know there's some. I've heard of some. It's his life, man. I hope he's well. Whatever that means. I feel bad that his life is affected by [mine] if it is. For him, it must be a drag."

Reeves's Relationship with His Mother

While his dad has no part in his life, Reeves is close with other family members. And even though the actor attributes his sense of humor to his dad, he's sure that he got his formality from his mother, Patricia Taylor. While his dad is a mixture of Portuguese, Hawaiian, and Chinese descent, his mother is from England, thus the iconic stiff upper lip.

Taylor has been seen by her son's side numerous times, and the pair are reportedly very close. Reeves isn't shy to show off the bond that he shares with his mom, and he even brought her as his plus-one when he hit the red carpet in 2020. Fans gushed as they saw the "Constantine" star proudly escorting his mother.

Reeves wore a traditional black tuxedo with a small white pocket square and a black waistcoat. He opted for a classic white button-up shirt paired with a stylish black bowtie and gleaming black Oxfords, and the entire outfit rounded off with his black locks hanging on his shoulders.

Meanwhile, Taylor looked just as captivating. Almost looking like her son's antithesis, Taylor opted for a completely white suit. Her stylish double-breasted white jacket paired with a matching pair of pants, smart pumps, and a rose gold clutch looked tremendous next to the well-dressed Reeves. Of course, she had the white curls to match Reeves's hair as they held hands and posed.
