Edwards spoke about Robel's upcoming birthday after his 44-point win against the Houston Rockets. Speaking to a sports reporter, Katie Storm, he said:

"My girlfriend's birthday is in two days, and she is going out of the country, so I had to put on a show for her."

Besides his girlfriend, he had other influential women in his life. His mother and grandmother passed away within a year when he was in the eighth grade. Edwards, who has also lost an older sister, said that his losses provoked the urge to care for his family and ignited a hunger that drove him to work hard.
