Charles Leclerc's love for racing sparked at four years old. He felt sick and didn't want to go to school when his father, Hervé Leclerc, took him kart racing instead. The track they visited belonged to Jules Bianchi, Charles Leclerc's godfather.

The rush of his first experience racing sparked an everlasting passion that his loved ones supported and encouraged, including his father and godfather, his mother, Pascale Leclerc, and his brothers.

Charles Leclerc's Father, Hervé Leclerc, Taught His Son Humility

Charles' father died after a long battle with an illness in June 2017, days before his son's F2 race in Baku, Azerbaijan. Charles was 19 then but navigated the devastating loss with grit and dignity.

"I sat myself down, and I said now I need to focus and make the best possible race for my father because he deserves that," he recalled. Charles remembered the overwhelming emotion that brought him to tears after finishing first place.

"It felt amazing, obviously. I mean, amazing is not the word, but on the other side, everything was so raw for me," Charles said of the feelings that arose simultaneously with his victory and grief.

His father was also a former F3 racer. He remained firmly at his son's side as he rose to the F1 ranks until his illness put him in a coma. As Charles' talent opened more doors for him, Hervé instilled a vital virtue, as the 25-year-old remembered:

"My father told me, 'Always be humble, even in good moments, especially when you feel unbeatable.'"

Charles Leclerc's Mother, Pascale Leclerc, Still Fears for Her Son

Pascale, alongside Hervé and their sons, supported Charles' love for racing. She knew it was in his blood and was confident he would go far. However, despite her pride in Charles' zeal to succeed, she couldn't help but fear for his safety.

"In kart, the first championships scared me a bit. I no longer accompanied my son and my husband to the races," she said in a 2018 interview (as translated by Google). Afterward, Pascale, who manages a hair salon, would follow her son's progress on the TV screen.

Charles Leclerc Valued His Family More after Losing His Father

Before his father died in 2017, Charles lost his godfather, Jules, in 2015. Jules was also a professional racer who died after a lengthy coma following a car crash at the Japanese Grand Prix in October 2014.

But after losing his dad, Charles' perspective on what mattered shifted. Although motorsport remained a crucial part of his life, he realized his family mattered more to him. "My values are that family is extremely important, a lot more than all of this," he said, alluding to his career.

Charles is one of three brothers, Arthur Leclerc, also a motorsports racer, and Lorenzo Leclerc, who works in finance, with whom he remains close. Other motorsports racers who share close-knit relationships with their loved ones include Sergio Pérez and Tony Stewart.
