Ella Mai was born to a Jamaican mother and an Irish father. When Ella was 12, her family relocated to Queens, New York, when she was in the eighth grade so her mother would secure a teaching job.

During that period, Ella Mai shied away from the attention of being a new kid at school, where she was the only student with an English accent. After graduating high school, she moved back to London; currently, she lives in Los Angeles.

Ella Mai's Mother Played a Key Role in Shaping Her Music Career

Ella and her brother were raised by their mother in South London. The "Boo'd Up" hitmaker grew up looking up to renowned artists, including Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, and Alicia Keys. The singer shared that she learned how to braid her hair and taught herself to play the piano because of Alicia.

Ella found her love for singing when she was young. Back then, she had a lively personality and was quite outgoing. She became a part of her local church and even auditioned for school musicals.

Ella Mai's mother played a role in fostering her singing talent as well. She enrolled Ella in a performing arts school as a child before they relocated to New York. Ella shared that she faced culture shock when she moved to New York, as it was far out of her comfort zone.

She recalled that many girls at her school disliked and things became more frustrating because she chose not to sing and draw attention to herself. Although, she never mentioned why they hated her.

Ella frequently talks about her mother, and her social media posts suggest a close bond. In 2017, she shared a black and white photo of her, adding a caption indicating that she and her mom are twins due to their resemblance. She wrote:

"Trying to figure out if me and my mum are long lost twins because this is literally her, but its me."

Ella's parents split when she and her brother were young. While the singer rarely talks about her father, she revealed that her mother did all the work of raising them. Her Jazz enthusiast mother named her daughter after the renowned Jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald.

The singer frequently shows affection to her mother, offering compliments and dedicating songs to her. The singer once performed live on stage, dedicating a song to her mother while holding her hand and standing alongside her.

Ella once shared in an interview that her mother taught her the importance of self-love and valuing how she wanted to be treated. She revealed that she gained insight from her mother's experiences, noting that her mother managed independently after parting ways with her father.

Despite being alone, Ella observed that her mother didn't seem to struggle and ensured she and her brother had everything they needed. Despite becoming a mother while still in school, Ella Mai's mom continued her education and has since advanced her education and holds a master's degree. The singer described her mother as determined, explaining that this quality greatly influenced her character and identity.
