"Good Omens," the critically acclaimed fantasy-comedy, debuted its second season in late July 2023; however, the book-adapted series didn't follow Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's original book plan. Instead, it was a filler season.

"Good Omens" first hit screens in 2019 on Amazon Prime. The show was adapted from Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's titular novel and perhaps their unfinished book series, the first installment of which was released in 1990.

The first season follows Crowley, a demon, and Arizaphale, an angel, as they attempt to prevent the world's end, a.k.a. Armageddon. The two deities succeeded, and much to their fans' satisfaction, the show was renewed for a second season.

It began airing in late July, earning "Good Omens" the number-one spot for a comedy series on Prime Video just days later. Audiences worldwide have thoroughly enjoyed Crowley and Arizaphale's return to their screens and are anxious for a third season following a heartwrenching cliffhanger.

Gaiman, who co-wrote the script for season two alongside John Finnemore, Cat Clarke, Jeremy Dyson, and Andy Nyman, recently shared insight on how this filler season came about and some hope for season three.

'Good Omens' Season Three Would Be Based on the Sequel, Said Gaiman

Gaiman and Pratchett had already plotted the book sequel for "Good Omens" before releasing the first novel in 1990. Gaiman recalled sharing a room with Pratchett at the 1989 World Fantasy Con in Seattle when they had that conversation.

Sadly, Pratchett died in 2015, and it has yet to be realized. The same can be said about the renewal for season three, but there is hope. Since season two doesn't follow the original book plan, Gaiman shared:

"Season 3 would be based on the sequel. Season 2 was how we get to the beginning of the sequel story."

Fans Anxious about 'Good Omens' Future

Fans of the beloved show have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their fears and longing for its renewal. Alongside a photo of Crowley standing between elevator doors, one wrote, "Me arriving at Amazon Video HQ about to raise hell bc they haven't renewed 'Good Omens' for S3 yet."

Another said, "Being a #GoodOmens fan, watching Amazon cancel shows they had previously renewed." Another person shared a photo of Crowley and Arizaphale looking somewhat bemused and quipped, "They're wondering why Good Omens hasn't been renewed yet."

Estimations Regarding 'Good Omens' Season Three

Rumor has it that "Good Omens" will indeed return for a third installment, sourced from Gaiman and Pratchett's unused sequel material. Although no official announcements have been made, reports estimate its debut in early 2025.

However, with the ongoing WGA strike and the resulting cancellation of numerous popular shows, there is skepticism in the air. Regarding the cast, the consensus is that David Tennant (Crowley) and Michael Sheen (Arizaphale) would undoubtedly return as the show's stars.

The same has been said about Jon Hamm, who plays Gabriel. Other cast members, including Miranda Richardson (Shax) — she nearly starred in the canceled "Game of Thrones" prequel — and Frances McDormand (God), are also expected to share the screen with Tennant and Sheen.
