'Our Flag Means Death' Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast & Plot of the HBO Max's Pirate Show's New Season
"Our Flag Means Death," an adventure and romantic comedy loosely based on real-life historical figures, first hit screens in early 2022, and audiences were enamored in the best ways. The show was renewed for a second season, which is set to debut in a matter of months.
"Our Flag Means Death" is a biographical series set in the 16th century, particularly 1717. It follows the wealthy aristocrat, Stede Bonnet, who abandons his pampered life with his family to live as a pirate on sea.
He earned the name "Gentleman Pirate" and became well-known for paying his ship's crew members, which was uncommon during those times. Stede meets Blackbeard, another real-life historical figure born Ed Teach, and the pair unexpectedly develops a genuine bond.
It becomes the central point of the show as it turns into romance and opens room for more profound concepts to be explored in a comically chaotic setting. The show's creators delved into what's next in the upcoming season and what fans can expect.
David Jenkins on 'Our Flag Means Death' Season Two Storyline: 'The Show Is the Relationship'
Ed and Stede's relationship in "Our Flag Means Death" has become one of many emerging beacons for queer representation in mainstream media, especially with its unorthodox placement in a long-gone time period.
The show's first season ends on a cliffhanger as the now-lovebirds are painfully separated. Hinting at what's explored in the show's second installment, filmmaker David Jenkins reflected:
"The show is the relationship. [...] What happens after a breakup between these two people who — one's realized he's in love, and the other one is hurt in a way that he's never been hurt before? What does that do to each of them in an action, pirate world with them trying to find each other again?"
'Our Flag Means Death' Release Date & Filming Location
A few months after season one aired, in June 2022, HBO announced that "Our Flag Means Death" was renewed for a second season, with Taika Waititi, the show's producer and star (he plays Blackbeard), sharing that filming was scheduled to begin that October. It is slated to air in October 2023.
He also revealed a new filming location; the crew moved from their previous location in Los Angeles to New Zealand. "We shot the last one in LA. Weird place to try and do something all on the ocean, so we're gonna go down to New Zealand, which is surrounded by it," he explained.
'Our Flag Means Death' Season Two Cast: Expect New Faces
The main cast will return for the second season, including Rhys Darby, who plays Stede; Joel Fry, who portrays Frenchie; and Vico Ortiz, who plays Jim. New faces, including Madeleine Sami, Anapela Polataivao, Minnie Driver, and Ruibo Qian, will also join the cast.
Driver will star as the real-life Irish pirate Anne Bonny, and Qian will play the mysterious merchant Susan. Season one had guest appearances from Nick Kroll, Leslie Jones, Kristen Schaal, and Will Arnett; however, those for season two are yet to be revealed.
