In 2022, Lauv released his hit song "All 4 Nothing (I'm So in Love)" and revealed he drew a lot of inspiration for the single from his relationship with Cates, who co-wrote the track. Although Lauv was nervous about creatively joining forces with his significant other, the experience was life-changing for the two singers.

When Lauv was still in a relationship with Cates, he shared a little insight into his sexuality in a TikTok video.

"Her coming into my life is, like, the biggest catalyst for all this positive change," Lauv said, adding that Cates also patiently loved him while he worked through the memories of his childhood, which was also a theme of his album.

During an interview in 2022, Lauv seemingly confirmed that he and Cates were no longer together when he said he had worked on "All 4 Nothing (I'm so in Love)" with his girlfriend "at the time." And some of his fans had different reactions to the news.
