When they married, Craig Ferguson and Anne Hogarth hadn't known each other long. Their families were against their decision to wed, feeling they were too young, but the pair tied the knot anyway.

In September 2009, Craig Ferguson published his memoir "American on Purpose," where, among various other personal topics, the comedian shared details about his first marriage in his early 20s.

His first wife was Anne Hogarth, a lover of the arts, TV, and film like himself. The former couple dated for six months before they were set on getting hitched. However, this was to the disapproval of many family members, who, it appears, were right.

Anne Hogarth and Craig Ferguson Were Flatmates at First

Anne was looking to replace one of two flatmates who had left to marry when she met Craig. Coincidentally, the actor was seeking a place to stay. Anne invited him to view the room if he liked, and they arranged to meet the next day.

By then, Craig was already attracted to Anne, but a friend told him she was "crazy" and was seeing someone. The friend further advised Craig that if Anne was to be his landlady, he should forget about any "funny business."

Craig agreed. Anne's father owned the four-storeyed building, and her apartment was on the top floor. Craig took the room she offered, and they decided on a rent price. During that conversation, they got to know each other more.

Anne Hogarth Told Craig Ferguson She Was a Highlander

Anne was from Campbeltown, a town in Scotland. She had graduated from the Glasgow School of Art and, at the time, was seeking work as a graphic designer for BBC. She loved movies and worked part-time as an Usher at the Glasgow Film Theater.

Anne could also give decent haircuts and even offered to cut Craig's. Additionally, she worked with a group of artists called The Intolerants. She told Craig about her love for the Gotham art scene and her desire to live in Manhattan, New York.

It was after the "Late Late Show" host confessed his filmmaking aspirations in America. Craig moved into the apartment on a Friday morning, and they went out separately that night but later bumped into each other.

He recalled that they were "both pretty drunk" when they returned, and that's when Anne showed her attraction to Craig. When he asked about her boyfriend, she replied, "I broke up with him." Six months after that intimate night, they were married.

Anne Hogarth's Family and Her Then-In-Laws Disapproved of Their Union

Anne was 25 when she tied the knot with Craig; he was 21. Her family warned her against marrying him, as they thought he was "too young and crazy to be anyone's husband." Craig's family felt the same.

Still, despite the disapproval, Craig and Anne wed on October 20, 1983, and moved to New York City. Craig said he and Anne genuinely cared for one another. They each worked hard and were happy during the first few months.

However, Craig began spending more time gallivanting around the city, which didn't fit Anne's vision of conventional married life. They eventually divorced, and upon reflection, Craig realized why he married, to begin with.

"I thought marriage would make me more mature, usher me into manhood, maybe slow down the drink and drugs. It would settle me down, as it were," the actor explained. He felt this was a "terrible reason" to get married and had since "apologized profusely" to Anne.

Following their separation, he remarried Sascha Ferguson, with whom he welcomed one child, Milo Hamish Ferguson. After divorcing Sascha, Craig tied the knot again with Megan Wallace Cunningham. The couple also has one kid, Liam, who shares a love for cars with Jay Leno, also a married man.
