- Bruce is suffering from a rare form of dementia.
- The actor was initially diagnosed with aphasia.
Emma Heming Willis recently shared an update about her husband Bruce Willis' ongoing health condition. She revealed how difficult the circumstances were and broached the subject of his awareness of what was happening.
Emma, a 45-year-old entrepreneur, appeared on the "Today" show on September 25, 2023, and discussed her spouse's battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Emma and her family announced early in 2023 that Bruce was diagnosed with the condition — which has robbed him of the ability to speak and communicate. She has since become an advocate for those struggling with the condition and their loved ones to bring awareness to the disease and the need for research.
The host, Hoda Kotb, asked Emma how she was holding up and how her famous husband was doing back home. She explained that she has learned that the disease is challenging for the person and their family.
"When they say that this is a family disease, it really is."
Emma and Bruce share two young children, daughters Mabel and Evelyn. When asked how the couple broke the news about the family patriarch's condition to their kids, Emma divulged they have an open policy at home and are honest people.
She was forthcoming about Bruce's disease and explained it to their children. The mother of two stressed she does not want "stigma" or "shame" attached to the actor's condition.
Emma described herself as her husband's care partner and shared she has had to ask for help while caring for him. She also highlighted the importance of taking care of herself so that she can be the best care partner for him.
Asked how the Willis family celebrates joy, the British American native revealed many good things are happening in their life and that Bruce would want them to enjoy the moments as they come.
In terms of what the A-list star is teaching the couple's kids, Emma divulged, "He's the gift that keeps on giving. Love. Patience. Resilience. So much." During the interview, Hoda asked whether the renowned movie star knows what is happening to him and his beloved wife Emma gave a candid response, saying:
"Hard to know. It's hard to know."
Emma's Stepdaughters Sing Her Praises
Following the interview, Emma's stepdaughters Scout and Tallulah, Bruce's older kids, supported the brunette beauty on Instagram. Scout posted a behind-the-scenes video from Emma's interview and commended her for being brave enough to appear on TV on behalf of the family to share their story and raise awareness about FTD.
Meanwhile, her younger sister, Tallulah, reshared the post on her Instagram account and expressed how "proud" she is of her loved ones while tagging her beloved stepmother, Emma.
On September 24, 2024, Emma posted a clip about the FTD cause and revealed frontotemporal dementia cannot be treated, nor can it be cured. She wrote that other families should know they are "not alone."
Emma revealed in a February 2023 post that the father of her kids, whom she married in 2009, was diagnosed with FTD and that they were now aware of what he was dealing with as his health issues had "progressed."
Initially, the family, including Bruce's former wife, Demi Moore, and their eldest child, Rumer, disclosed in March 2022 that the action star was "diagnosed with aphasia," which affects his cognitive abilities.
