Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were one of the most loved Hollywood couples. Although things did not work out, Cannon will forever cherish Carey. He recently opened up about how Carey saved his life when he struggled to grapple with his lupus diagnosis.

Their relationship started when Cannon introduced Carey at the Teen Choice Awards. At the time, Cannon's career as a comedian and TV and radio host was still on the rise, while the "We Belong Together" singer was already a force to be reckoned with.
Meeting Carey was a dream come true for Cannon. During their interview with Barbara Walters, he confessed that he had been publicly open about Carey being his ultimate celebrity crush.

The hitmaker also said that she had people come up to her telling her how much Cannon liked her, which she found funny. Nonetheless, she fell for him, and the TV host proposed to her with what she thought was a ring made out of candy as a nod to their shared love for sweets, but it was actually a massive diamond ring. The two went on to welcome twins Monroe and Morrocan.

The "All I Want For Christmas" singer opened up about how difficult the pregnancy was. From the outside, everything looked rosy—with Carey still performing and releasing a Christmas album—but in the background, she was on bed rest and frequently visited the hospital.

This was not the first time the singer had to maintain her stardom status while dealing with major family issues. This time, the person who was in and out of the hospital was Cannon.
In 2012, Cannon scared his supporters when Carey shared a picture of her lying on a hospital bed, helping him drink with a straw. She urged fans to pray for her then-husband, who was dealing with a minor kidney failure.

Soon after surviving the health scare, the "Wild'n'Out" host had an interview with "Good Morning America," where he revealed that the kidney failure was caused by lupus.
Cannon further disclosed that his lupus diagnosis was a rare kind that attacked his kidneys. He used to pride himself as someone who took care of his health, but he realized that he needed to do better to maintain good health.

During the interview, Cannon also said he was slowly trying to figure out his diagnosis and the kind of food he needed to eat to keep the flares at bay. But the comedian confessed that the diet was tough and left him no room for fast food.
Through it all, Cannon was lucky to have the support of Carey. While presenting his then-wife at the BET Awards in 2012, the actor candidly spoke about the love and care he received from the award-winning singer.

As her husband, he saw Carey juggle the pressure of her fame with her role as a loving wife, taking care of his needs. He expressed;
"When times are hard, you guys don't see her at 3 o'clock in the morning, getting up in the middle of the night, fixing me soup when my kidneys ain't acting right. Mariah Carey does that."
Despite how things turned out between him and Carey— the couple split in 2014 and were divorced by 2016—Cannon still acknowledges that the singer is the reason he is alive today.
How Did Mariah Carey Save Nick Cannon's Life
In a recent candid interview on the podcast "The Diary of a CEO," hosted by Steven Bartlett, Cannon opened up about how Carey helped save his life.

The actor revealed that in the early stages of his lupus journey, he was in and out of the hospital for almost three weeks trying to figure out how to deal with it.
He spoke of the flares he experiences with lupus that can affect his body in many ways, impacting his ability to walk and causing blood clots, inflammation, or kidney failure.

Navigating these many health issues and spending time in the hospital also affected him mentally. He wondered if he would make it, what legacy he would be leaving his children, and how the rest of the world would remember him.
The frustration of dealing with lupus also made him stubborn, and fortunately, he had Carey, who was patient with him and the doctors, ensuring that he got the best treatment possible.
Therefore, when Cannon did not see a way out, Carey was the best support system both as a mother and wife. If it was not for her efforts, the actor believes he would not be alive today.
He also admitted that his attitude during this time took a toll on his marriage, but they felt significantly closer in the end. Cannon and Carey eventually went their separate ways and finalized their divorce in 2016.
However, they have always done their best to put their children first. A source revealed that they still spend the holidays together.

Despite not being romantically involved anymore, Cannon will always be grateful for Carey's impact on his life. He even said he would give his life for Carey because she will forever be his family.

The radio host reveals he frequents the hospital less these days because he has good doctors helping him with his lupus. His health has also made him less scared of death. Cannon's priority is to live his life to the fullest and be remembered as a man who did everything to enjoy life, made people laugh, and always had a big smile.
