In the world of comedy, Bob Saget stands as an iconic figure, celebrated for his sharp wit, humor, and unique brand of stand-up and television comedy. Yet, beneath the comedic genius that has endeared Bob to audiences for years lies a sobering narrative of personal loss.

Bob endured the untimely deaths of family members, including his sister, Andrea Saget, who passed away in her thirties. She is one of the siblings Bob lost prematurely, casting a shadow of grief and pain throughout the comedian's life.

How Andrea's Brother Dealt With Family Loss

A series of early deaths plagued Andrea's family. Bob, her brother, revealed that their parents had lost four children. Two of those siblings, born before Bob, were unknown to him.

The two sisters he grew up with died young, with Andrea dying at 34 due to a brain aneurysm and another succumbing to a little-known disease that hardens the skin.

Bob employed dark humor as his coping mechanism to navigate the relentless onslaught of loss that befell their family. He believed in finding joy, happiness, and a deep sense of importance in life, especially when faced with overwhelming suffering and tragedy. In his memoir, he wrote:

"My family saw so much death and drama over the years it was like we were always waiting for the next tragedy to arrive."

Andrea holds a special place in her brother's heart. In his memoir, Bob reflected on the profound losses in his personal life, including the passing of people close to his heart, such as his two sisters, whom he all viewed as his "true heroes."

Andrea And Her Sister's Heartbreaking Deaths

Andrea died of a brain aneurysm in September 1984 in Philadelphia. She was laid to rest at the Roosevelt Memorial Park in Pennsylvania—far from where the rest of her dead family members were buried.

A few years later, Andrea's sister, Gay Audrey Saget Nelson, lost her battle with scleroderma in Los Angeles in April 1994 at 47. Gay was laid to rest at Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Los Angeles County, California.

Her brother later became a passionate advocate for those afflicted by this chronic autoimmune connective tissue disease. He was deeply committed to finding a cure, honoring Gay's memory, and helping others who faced a similar diagnosis.

Bob's advocacy efforts garnered praise and recognition. He recounted how he became involved as an advocate, tracing it back to an unexpected call from Sharon Monskey, a former ice skater and founder of the Scleroderma Research Foundation (SRF).

He also hosted a comedy fundraiser for this little-known disease. In January 2020, he posted on Facebook, commemorating what would have been Gay's 73rd birthday and expressing his dedication to the cause as an SRF board member and the progress made by the group in the fight against the disease.

In past interviews, Bob shared the heart-wrenching journey of Gay's battle with scleroderma. She was diagnosed at 43 but endured multiple misdiagnoses as rheumatologists were often unfamiliar with scleroderma, which contributed to the difficulty in effectively treating her. "I wish I'd known then what I know now," Bob said.

Other Members Of The Saget Family Have Passed Away

Andrea's parents have also passed away: Rosalyn and Benjamin M. Saget. Benjamin, a former senior executive with a supermarket chain, passed away in January 2007 after suffering from complications from congestive heart failure.

Meanwhile, Rosalyn died in February 2014 due to complications resulting from abdominal cancer. She was an administrative executive assistant for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Bob's untimely death deeply saddened his friends in the entertainment industry, including actor John Stamos, comedians Dave Chappelle and Jeff Ross, and musician John Mayer, who all expressed their grief and shared their memories of their late colleague.

Bob was also the original host of "America's Funniest Videos" and became famous in the "Full House" sitcom, where he starred alongside Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
