Alarms soon sounded throughout the building. "Everybody started freaking out," revealed sixth-grader Breken Ives, who was shocked by the intercom announcement. "Lockdown. This is not a drill."

Breken's teacher acted swiftly, instructing the students to hide in a corner, out of view from the door. While sheltering, he heard gunshots and screams echoing from the hallway.

As chaos continued, younger children also faced terrifying moments. Eight-year-old Nora Gottschalk, a second grader, was in the hallway preparing for lunch when the shooting erupted.

She witnessed a familiar teacher who had been injured and recounted during an interview, "She was screaming, 'Ah, my leg, help, help!' I was really scared, and I was really sad."

The fear and confusion extended throughout the school. Sixth-grader Adler Jean-Charles was in his English class when the lockdown began. He recalled hearing two gunshots, followed by the sounds of his classmates crying as they waited for police to arrive and escort them to safety.

Though scared and bewildered by the incident, Adler later found comfort when the students were taken to the hospital to meet their families. Given a teddy bear during the reunion, he finally felt safe when he saw his mother.

Adler's mother, Mireille Jean-Charles, was emotionally overwhelmed as she reunited with her children. Her two other sons also attended the Christian school, and they cried and prayed as a family when they were finally together.

The weight of the experience was evident. Mireille shook her head and cried when asked if she was all right. The concerned parent described the anguish of receiving the call about the lockdown and not knowing her children's whereabouts.

Though relieved that her kids were safe, she admitted that the trauma was profound, "[...] I'm sure they lost friends and teachers, which is not OK. And I don't think they'll be OK for a long time."

The tragedy deeply affected the community, including Bethany Highman, a former ALCS student whose daughter currently attends the school. Though her daughter was unharmed, Bethany anxiously waited to be reunited, uncertain of her child's whereabouts.

While grappling with the reality of the day, she reflected on her morning prayers for her children's safety, acknowledging the world's difficulties. Despite everything, she remained steadfast in her faith, grateful that her family was safe.

The sense of fear and uncertainty gripped not only the families but the entire school community. In response to the incident, ALCS turned to its Facebook page for support. They wrote, "Prayers Requested! Today, we had an active shooter incident at ALCS. We are in the midst of following up. We will share information as we are able."

As the investigation unfolded, Madison police confirmed the shooter was 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, who went by Samantha. Police Chief Shon Barnes revealed during a press conference that she was a student at ALCS.

Natalie was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital, with evidence indicating she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the aftermath, the investigation turned to the weapon used in the attack. According to two law enforcement officials, the shooter used a 9-millimeter pistol.
