The Protest During Kendrick Lamar's Performance
Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl LIX halftime show had all the hallmarks of a flawless performance until one dancer's unscripted act disrupted the flow. The incident occurred during Lamar's performance of his hit song "Not Like Us," when a member of the 400-person cast unfurled a flag with the words "Gaza" and "Sudan."

The performer, blending in with other dancers dressed in similar outfits, climbed onto a car onstage and waved the flag for all to see. As the crowd watched in confusion, the dancer jumped down and ran across the field, waving the flag in front of thousands in the audience and millions watching at home.

Security guards responded quickly, tackling the man on the field and escorting him out of the stadium.
The NFL's Response and Security Concerns
The NFL wasted no time addressing the incident, commending security for their swift response. In a statement, the league confirmed that the performer would be banned for life from attending any NFL event or entering any league stadium.

Officials emphasized that the act was unscripted, making it clear that neither the NFL nor the production team was aware of the performer's intentions.
Roc Nation, the entertainment company led by Jay-Z that oversees Super Bowl halftime productions, supported the NFL's statement. "The act by the individual was neither planned nor part of the production and was never in any rehearsal," a representative said.

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) also confirmed that although the individual was detained and removed from the stadium, no arrest or summons was issued. However, the incident raised concerns about security protocols at such a high-profile event.
Security expert Will Geddes described the breach as a significant failure. He noted how the performer brought the flag onto the field undetected and executed his protest in front of a massive audience.

Given the presence of high-ranking officials and global attention to the event, the security lapse drew criticism from multiple quarters.
Zül-Qarnain Nantambu Speaks Out
Days after the incident, Zül-Qarnain Nantambu, a New Orleans-based artist and activist, came forward and identified himself as the individual behind the unsanctioned protest.
Nantambu explained that the act was meant to show solidarity with the people of Sudan and Gaza, both of which have been ravaged by ongoing conflicts.
Nantambu clarified that his act "wasn't political," adding that it was about supporting the oppressed and raising awareness of the suffering. He stressed that Lamar had no prior knowledge of his plan and that his decision to wave the flag was personal.
According to Nantambu, the idea first came to him during rehearsals, and by the third or fourth practice, he was committed to following through.

Nantambu, a hip-hop artist and filmmaker known for speaking openly about Muslim identity and social justice issues, described the protest as an act of faith. "By the mercy and permission of Allah, it was me," he said.
He believed it was his responsibility to use that platform to raise awareness, saying, "I wanted to show that we are united, that they are loved and prayed for."

Nantambu's protest was about two humanitarian crises — Sudan's ongoing civil war and the conflict in Gaza. In Sudan, nearly two years of fighting have devastated the country, displacing millions and creating a dire humanitarian emergency.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, over a year of violent clashes has left countless civilians in desperate need of aid. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) praised Nantambu's actions, calling his protest a peaceful and courageous effort to raise awareness.

While the debate over Nantambu's actions continues, his demonstration drew attention to global issues that might have otherwise gone unnoticed that night.
