From Stage Partners to Soulmates: How a Play Sparked a Psychic Connection and Lifelong Love
Caulfield was cast opposite Mills in the American tour of the acclaimed stage play "The Elephant Man." He portrayed John Merrick, a man whose physical differences earned him the play’s haunting title. Mills played Mrs. Kendal, the actress who shows him kindness and connection.

Their chemistry was immediate. Mills once said in a joint interview that they became instant friends and felt drawn to each other from the very beginning:
"I believe in reincarnation and I believe I'd known Maxwell in another life. It was like saying, 'Oh hello, there you are.'"

Caulfield called it a full-blown romance, explaining that their bond felt psychic and happened in a flash. For their first date, they went to see Harold Pinter's "Betrayal" on Broadway. At just 21, Caulfield was 18 years younger than Mills, and while the age difference stirred headlines back home, it barely caused a ripple in the States.

"We were living in California and it didn't make so much news over there," Mills divulged. "I never felt any negative reaction. We were in a euphoric state. We never worried about the age gap." Their families and friends didn't question it either. The actress spoke warmly of her husband, describing him as romantic, protective, and her best friend.

Caulfield planned their entire wedding himself. They exchanged vows at sunrise on a clifftop at Point Dume in Malibu in 1980, followed by a small reception at Mills's Beverly Hills home. He transformed the space with fairy lights and archways, even arranging for a plane to fly overhead with a message that read: "JMC for ever."

When he proposed, he pulled two doves from the pockets of his tuxedo and let them fly into the sky. "I was inspired," he said. "She brings out the romantic in me. When, God willing, we have a 40th anniversary, I’ll have to buy an entire flock." Now, 44 years later, the Hollywood couple continues to prove that love at first sight can last a lifetime.
