James Van Der Beek's Wife, Kimberly, Shares a Bittersweet Message Following Eric Dane's Passing at 53
James Van Der Beek has died at 49, his wife confirmed in a heartfelt Instagram post. In the days that followed, another Hollywood death would place his passing in a broader, more somber context.
James Van Der Beek died on February 11, 2026, Kimberly Van Der Beek announced. The actor rose to prominence on "Dawson's Creek" and built a decades-long television career.
The announcement came just over a week before another loss in the entertainment industry.

Two Television Actors Die Within Days
In a statement shared on Instagram, Kimberly announced that "James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully" that morning. She said he faced his final days with "courage, faith, and grace," and described him as a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
James became widely known for his role as Dawson Leery on "Dawson's Creek" and continued working in television and film in the years that followed.
Eight days after his death was announced, another loss struck the television community.
On February 19, Eric Dane died at 53, his family confirmed to People. The "Grey's Anatomy" actor had publicly shared his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) 10 months earlier.
"He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world," Eric's family said.
But behind the public condolences, another layer of the story was quietly emerging.

The Photo That Revealed a Deeper Connection
After the news was made public, Kimberly posted an Instagram Story featuring a past photo of the two families together.
The image showed Eric alongside his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters at a previous gathering. Kimberly's message indicated the two families had spent holidays and social occasions together, linking the two losses through a shared personal history.
But Kimberly wasn't the only one quietly sharing something personal.

Rebecca Opens up in a Personal Post
Rebecca later addressed the public response in a message shared on her Instagram Story.
In the post, she expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the community, saying the encouragement had helped sustain her family during an especially difficult time.
The message appeared over an image of framed family photographs and softly lit candles arranged in what appeared to be an intimate memorial setting inside her home.

And beyond the tributes and personal reflections, another effort was unfolding behind the scenes.
What Friends Did Behind the Scenes
Friends created a GoFundMe page titled "In Honor of Eric Dane" to support Rebecca and the couple's daughters.
The fundraiser described Eric's death as the result of a hard-fought battle with ALS and highlighted his advocacy for the ALS community after his diagnosis.
It explained that as his condition progressed more rapidly than expected, friends organized the campaign to help provide financial stability for his daughters' future.
The effort quickly drew significant support. Top donors included Sam and Ashley Levinson with $27,000, an anonymous donor with $25,000, Hailey Bieber with $20,000, another anonymous donor with $18,000, and Brad Falchuk with $10,000.
Eric's passing continued to unfold publicly in the days that followed, as those closest to him began sharing their grief in different ways.
Just one day after Eric's death was announced, his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, was spotted for the first time since his passing.
Though she has not released a public statement, Rebecca marked the moment in a subtle but personal way. Interestingly, another woman in Eric's life chose to do the same.

A Somber First Sighting
On Friday, Rebecca was spotted wrapped in a beige trench coat as she stepped out of the Los Angeles home where the "Grey's Anatomy" actor had been living before his passing, according to Page Six.

She wore glasses and pulled her hair into an updo, carrying a black leather handbag as she exited the property on February 20.
Although the actress and model did not speak to the photographers or share any real words online, she has chosen a beautiful but bittersweet way to remember Dane.
The Stories She Chose To Share
In the days following Eric's death, Rebecca has been consistently posting Instagram Stories filled with memories of him and their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia Dane, 14, on her Instagram. Instead of statements, she let photographs tell the story.
In one particularly touching image, the family is gathered around several birthday cakes for Eric. Georgia sits on Rebecca's lap, while Billie stands behind him, capturing a warm and joyful celebration now frozen in time.

And finally, one image features just Rebecca and Eric at an event, dressed in casual elegance. Even though they had been separated (not yet divorced), these uploads quietly show that Rebecca still treasured Eric.
Furthermore, each memory feels deliberate and reminds followers that, beyond the fame, he was first and foremost a father.

And while Rebecca’s moments with the actor continue to gain attention, someone else was sharing memories in her own way.
Another Stream Of Memories
Eric's girlfriend, director and photographer Janell Shirtcliff, has also been active on Instagram following his passing. Like Rebecca, she did not release a written statement, but she has posted Stories.
Some of her uploads show Eric alone in candid moments, offering a several glimpses of him as she saw him.

Most, however, show the two of them together. In one intimate shot, Eric kisses her head as they stand on steps outside a house, capturing a quiet display of affection.
