Joey Barton Arrested on Suspicion of Assault Near Liverpool Golf Club — Police Investigating
The 43-year-old — one of two men held by Merseyside Police — is currently in custody as detectives investigate what sources describe as a violent attack on Sunday night.
Joey Barton, the former Premier League footballer turned podcaster, has been arrested on suspicion of serious assault after a man was found badly injured near a golf club in Merseyside — in a dramatic late-night incident that has sent shockwaves through social media.

'At Least It Wasn't a Woman This Time': The Furious Public Reaction to Barton's Latest Run-In with the Law
Joey, 43, and a second man, aged 50, were arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding — one of the most serious assault charges in English law — after emergency services were called to Huyton at 9 pm on Sunday.
Officers from Merseyside Police arrived to find a man with injuries to his face and ribs. He was swiftly taken to hospital, where his condition is understood to be serious but stable. The victim has not been identified.

Sources told the Liverpool Echo that the younger of the two men held in custody is Huyton-born Joey — who was raised in the very town where Sunday night's alleged altercation unfolded.
A Scene of Chaos: Cordons, Sniffer Dogs, and Sand-Strewn Pavements
The scale of the police response left local residents shaken. Merseyside Police erected a cordon on Fairway in the Knowsley area shortly after the incident — only to remove it, then re-erect it the following evening, compounding the unease felt by those living nearby.

A Matrix van — a specialised vehicle deployed to tackle serious and organised crime — was also spotted at the scene the following morning, alongside officers conducting fingertip searches and a sniffer dog unit.
One neighbour, unsettled by the unfolding events, recalled the moment they first stumbled upon the stricken victim. "We didn't know if he had fallen or if he'd been attacked," they said. "We just rang an ambulance and then we saw the blue lights arrive."

The same neighbour described returning to find the scene eerily scrubbed clean. "When my partner went to work yesterday morning they had took the cordon down and they were washing the pavement," they said. "That's why there's sand all over the pavement from where they washed it. Then they came back around 8 pm last night."

'He's Never Out [of] Jail': Online Fury as Barton's Arrest Goes Viral
The news spread rapidly across social media, where members of the public were swift — and scathing — in their reaction.
"At least it wasn't a woman this time," wrote one netizen pointedly, in an apparent reference to Joey's troubled past. "Shocking," remarked another, drily. "He's never out the jail hahaha," joked a third. "Not for the first time," added a fourth.
Merseyside Police confirmed in a statement, "The victim was taken to hospital for assessment of injuries to his face and ribs. A 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old man have both been arrested on suspicion of s18 wounding."
Both men remain in custody. Enquiries are ongoing.

'Have the Best Day — We Love You Loads': Georgia Barton Carries On as Husband Sits in Custody
While Joey remained in a police custody suite, his wife appeared entirely untroubled by the unfolding drama. Earlier today, Georgia Barton took to her Instagram Stories to celebrate a friend's birthday, sharing a sunny collage of photographs from previous getaways together.
"Happy birthday to the ball of the best energy you could wish to be around," she wrote. "Have the best day we love you loads."
Not a word about her husband's arrest. Not a flicker of public concern.

'He Grabbed Her and Pushed Her to the Ground': The Conviction That Has Never Been Far from Barton's Shadow
Sunday night's arrest is far from Joey's first brush with the criminal justice system — and for many, the news has dredged up deeply uncomfortable memories of a conviction handed down just twelve months ago.
In March 2025, Joey was found guilty of assault by beating after pushing his wife, Georgia, 38, to the floor and kicking her during a drunken row at the couple's family home in Kew, south-west London.

The attack took place in June 2021, while their children slept upstairs and the couple had been drinking with two other couples. The evening had turned violent after Joey — then manager of Bristol Rovers — threatened to fight Georgia's brother and father.
What followed, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard, was a terrifying assault that left Georgia with a lump on her forehead and a bleeding nose.

'Me Husband's Just Hit Me': The Harrowing 999 Call That Sealed His Fate
Georgia called police immediately after the attack — and the recording of that call, played to a hushed courtroom, made for devastating listening. Tearfully, she told the handler, "Me husband's just hit me in the house. He's in the house, I'm outside."
When asked whether anything like this had ever happened before, her answer was unequivocal. "No, it's the first time," she replied, adding that she had been hit "in the face."

When officers arrived at approximately 11.30 pm, Georgia told them, "I've been pushed down and kicked about and stuff. He said he was going to fight with my brother and my dad."
Prosecutor Helena Duong told the court that Joey had "grabbed her and pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the head" — and that when a friend tried to intervene, Joey "threw" him off, snarling, "Don't disrespect me."

Joey was arrested shortly before midnight, after being found asleep in his bedroom, still drunk. He did not comment when questioned by the police.
A Trial Years in the Making — and a Conviction Joey Fought to Avoid
The road to conviction was not straightforward. The original trial, scheduled for 2022, was adjourned after Georgia wrote to prosecutors claiming her injuries had been caused accidentally when a friend stepped in to separate the pair. "I'm not a victim," she said. "I want to move on with my life."
A judge later paused proceedings entirely, ruling that a fair trial could not proceed after the prosecution indicated it would not call Georgia to give evidence. But the Director of Public Prosecutions, Stephen Parkinson, appealed the decision at the High Court — and won.
Two senior judges ruled that Joey should face trial before a different judge. He did — and he was convicted. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring rejected Joey's account of events outright, describing them as "vague".

Though he acknowledged that Joey had "a record of violence", he stopped short of immediate imprisonment, handing down a 12-week suspended prison sentence on the mitigating grounds that the couple remained in what he described as a "happy relationship" with a young child.
"That is not something I want to interfere with," the magistrate said. Joey was also ordered to pay £2,183 in victim surcharge and prosecution costs within seven days.

'Does He Assault All of You?': The Fans Who Cannot Forgive — or Forget
Georgia has remained married to Joey. Her social media posts present a picture of harmonious family life with their four children — but online, the public's patience has long since expired.
"She still with this whimp," remarked one person bluntly. "I hope Santa brought you a helmet," sniped another. "I mean an actual helmet. Not the one you married." And perhaps the most searing comment of all read, "Does he assault all of you?"
As Joey sits in a Merseyside police custody suite, those words hang in the air with renewed and troubling weight.
And there is one further detail that will not be lost on investigators: Joey is still serving his suspended prison sentence. Should the terms of that sentence be found to have been breached, the consequences could be severe.
