Kate Spade’s father dies one night before daughter’s funeral
Renowned fashion and handbag designer Kate Spade's 89-year-old father, Earl F. Brosnahan Jr., passed away on Wednesday, one day before her funeral.
Kansas City Star obtained a statement released by the family, saying they are 'deeply saddened to announce that [Earl] passed away on Wednesday evening.'
The statement also included a summary of Earl's life, explaining that he was a Kansas City resident for all his life. He was known as Frank to those dear to him.
He briefly left in the late 1940's to serve in the U.S. Navy and to graduate from university at the age of 20 before returning to his hometown and the family business.
Frank married June Therese Mullen four years after returning home, and the couple had six children. After his marriage fell apart, Frank married Sandy Palmer in 1992
He took over the construction company, Midwest Heavy Construction Association, from his parents and assumed the role of president in the mid-sixties.
He passed away two weeks after Kate's death and is survived by his second wife, four siblings, five children, and eight grandchildren.
As reported by Fox News, Kate's funeral service was scheduled for Thursday, June 21, at the same church where her grandparents exchanged wedding vows.
The 55-year-old Kate was found dead in her New York apartment on June 5, after she had hanged herself with a scarf.
In an interview shortly after her death, Frank said his daughter was struggling with her mental health. She was on medication, and he didn't approve of it.
He told Kansas City Star that he spoke to her the evening before her death and said she was in high spirits, planning a family trip for later in the year.
