Melanie Griffith shares makeup-free photo after skin cancer surgery

Griffith was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2009 and has since undergone several operations and procedures. Now, she hopes her experience helps making people more aware of the risks involved in exposure to the sun.

On August 26, 61-year-old actress Melanie Griffith posted a makeup-free self-portrait on her Instagram account that shows her bandaged nose after a series of treatments to battle a returning skin cancer, as Shared reported.

The former wife of Spanish actor Antonio Banderas wanted to raise awareness among her 377,000 followers on Instagram by sharing the results of a process that, as she reminds us, can seem long but can save your life.

In 2009, the actress underwent the first surgical intervention, and she had to return to the operating room once at the beginning of 2018. Read more on our Twitter account @amomama_usa

Griffith revealed the scars from her past procedures in February, when she attended a red carpet event, before revealing she still had to be treated as the cancer was affecting her once again.

“Bandaged again after having dermabrasion, the final step to fix the now removed basil cell skin cancer. If any of you have it, get it fixed. If you lay in the sun, are exposed to lots of sun, be careful.”

“Use sunscreen. Get checked out by your Dermatologist. If you don’t have one, get one, or go to your nearest clinic and ask to be tested for it. More info to come!” wrote the star, announcing she will continue talking about this health issue.

After hearing the recent news from their favorite stars, her followers took to the comments section of her post to send her their good wishes and support.

“As a melanoma survivor I can’t love this enough that you are sharing with everyone the need to protect your skin!” wrote @mrssheldon.

“I just had a basal removed from my breast 2 weeks ago. Very scary. It affects a woman mentally as well when going through this. Especially on your face or breast. Thanks for sharing your experience,” added @ritabokin.

Her honest display of the consequences of her health condition comes soon after she was heavily criticized for the photo shoot she did for an InStyle editorial that was clearly retouched by digital means.

After being married four times –twice to Don Johnson, before her marriages to Steven Bauer and Antonio Banderas, with whom she stayed together for 19 years- Griffith shocked many people in her InStyle interview when she admitted that she didn’t think marriage was “relevant for anyone anymore.”
