According to a source, the 57-year-old actor filed for divorce on Thursday. He cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.

The pair has been married for 22 years. They share two daughters together: Sonnet, 22, and True, 20, and both also have one child each from previous relationships.

The Black Panther actor is asking to terminate the court’s ability to award support to Nash revealed the documents. Whitaker is requesting that they are responsible for their own attorney’s fees.

They had tied the knot on May 4, 1996, but it seems their love has deteriorated. According to the documents, Whitaker left the couple’s date of separation as "still to be determined."

Whitaker and Nash met in 1994 on the set of Blown Away. The two played each other's on-screen love interests.

They started dating shortly after meeting. In two years they were engaged and married. Now 22 years later, it seems that their connection has fizzled out.

On Christmas Day, Whitaker took to Twitter. He shared a heartfelt message about being with the ones you love.

"Christmas is a celebration of solidarity - a time of the year when we are reminded that the bonds our families, friends, fellow citizens and beyond are based on sharing and bringing joy. #MerryChirstmas to you all!" he tweeted.

Whitaker and Nash aren't the only celebrity couple to call it quits this year. Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum also announced their divorce earlier this year.
