NeNe Leakes Considers Divorce Amid Husband Gregg's Cancer Battle
NeNe Leakes is not ruling out divorce as an option as it’s revealed she and her husband, Gregg Leakes, had been having marital troubles even before his cancer diagnosis.
Earlier this month, NeNe, 51, joined Gregg in celebrating a milestone in his fight against cancer, but it appears all is not entirely well with the Leakes.
SLEEPING APART
On Sunday’s episode of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” reunion, the couple opened up about everything from divorce to cheating and revealed they still sleep in separate rooms, according to PEOPLE.
Although NeNe and Gregg admitted they’re seeing a counselor to help them work through things, her response to the reunion host Andy Cohen’s question about whether they still hope to save their marriage, was not encouraging.
NENE'S CONCLUSION
Gregg, 64, told Cohen that he still hopes to, but NeNe was not so sure or optimistic.
“I can’t tell you anything that I’m going to do. I feel like I have been pushed up against a wall and I’m coming out as ‘no.’ … Anything is possible, we just have to see.”
During the episode, Gregg also confessed that he wasn’t too happy with how his wife reveals too much of their lives on the Bravo show, specifically his history of infidelity.
PREVIOUS MARRIAGE TROUBLES & CANCER DIAGNOSIS
NeNe and Gregg have always had their fair share of conflicts as a couple. The pair first tied the knot in 1997, but that journey ended in divorce in 2011. Two years later, they reconciled and walked down the aisle a second time.
Gregg’s cancer diagnosis last May seemed to make things worse, however, with NeNe lashing out several times on “RHOA” and social media about Gregg’s mean attitude towards her.
FRUSTRATIONS & CONFESSIONS
Although NeNe got a lot of backlash from social media users who thought she was insensitive to speak about her husband that way, Gregg himself came to her defense earlier this year.
The businessman agreed that he had been hurting his wife and publicly asked for her forgiveness.
“I’m tired of hurting my wife who is only trying to take good care of me and wants only the best for me too,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “She deserves much more for her hard efforts and tireless hours spent on me.”
'OUR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT GREAT'
Gregg said as much again during Sunday’s reunion episode when he claimed he’s “not a poster child for kindness,” but both he and NeNe agreed that all was not well between them even before cancer.
NeNe further implied that the cancer diagnosis is what is still keeping her with Gregg:
“Gregg is not a walk in the park. Not even if he didn’t have cancer, he is not a walk in the park. Our relationship is not great. It really put a strain on us. …It would be easy to make a decision about divorcing Gregg if he didn’t have cancer. I don’t want to live my life unhappy.”
GREGG VALUES THEIR FRIENDSHIP
Ultimately, even Gregg did not seem to find the idea of parting ways outrageous. “The reward might not necessarily be that we are husband and wife at the end,” he concluded. “The reward might be that we are best of friends at the end.”
NeNe and Gregg, who share a 20-year-old son, Brentt, looked like the perfect lovebirds earlier this month when they danced passionately to celebrate Gregg’s completion of six months of chemotherapy.
Here’s hoping the couple eventually work out their issues and do what is best for everyone involved.
