Adrienne Houghton on the Criticism She's Faced from Christians (Video)
Adrienne Houghton reveals that it's not just Meagan Good who's been having a hard time going to church due to being the target of criticisms by other Christians. "I Get It Pretty Bad," she says, recalling the times she's been misjudged by churchgoers.
On "The Real," Adrienne Houghton shared her thoughts about Meagan Good's recent interview. She said that she could relate to how unwelcomed Meagan feels when going to church. Being married to a famous gospel singer, Isaac Houghton, Adrienne believes that people have been judging her for not truly being Christian. She says that because of Isaac's clean image, people expect her to act or look a certain way. She's even been called "fake religious" just to fit in with her partner.
“I’ve talked to you guys about this. I get it pretty bad,” she said. “I think I take that and I never complain about it because at the end of the day, it’s like what Tam said: I’m not here for you, I’m here for Jesus. I feel God’s love every day in my life. I feel like people don’t realize church is like a hospital. It’s for the broken people, it’s not for the ones who are already saved. We need Jesus, so instead of pushing us away, you should accept us with open arms."
A Christian's True Love
Houghton believes that sometimes, Christians make you feel unwelcome in a place where everyone should be welcomed. However, she's met a lot of people who don't call themselves Christians but are Christ-like in the way they treat others.
" If you see somebody doing something wrong, be an example of God’s love. They say ‘Come as you are,’ but do you make people feel that way? And I have found places and churches and incredible people who actually just don’t call themselves Christians, but they are Christ-like in the way they love people. So I’m grateful for that and I also don’t make excuses for myself. I’m not perfect. I still have a ways to go in my walk with Christ. I was raised Pentecostal, and a lot of people don’t know that and a lot of people say, ‘Well she married Israel, now all of a sudden she’s talking about Jesus.’ Jesus has been in my life since the day I was born. I was dedicated to God. But that’s not for me to prove to you.”
Unwelcomed feeling
Just last week, Meagan Good revealed that she hasn't been going to church despite always showing how devout she is as a Christian. This was because she has been receiving negative vibes from people who go to church with her.
“Not all the time though because if I’m being completely honest, my experience with some church folks has not been that positive. It’s unfortunate because we’re supposed to be the biggest lover. Even if you disagree with someone or you don’t think what they’re doing is right, you’re supposed to mind your own business and pray for that person. Other times, you’re supposed to correct in love if that’s what God told you to do. And there was no correction in love. It was like a complete assault.”
However, the "Think Like a Man" star revealed that regardless of the hate she's received, she still loves her fellow Christians and the church.
