Mary J. Blige's mother, Cora, had a birthday and the singer marked the occasion with a loving post on Instagram.
Mary has often referred to her mother as her inspiration, especially for her album, "Strength of a Woman."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A LOVING MOM
Mary posted a sweet photo that shows herself, her mother and two friends seated around a table, clearly celebrating.
Mary is the second of Cora's three children, and she has an older sister and a younger brother.
Although Mary was married to Martin "Kendu" Isaacs for 15 years, the couple had no children.
A DIFFICULT CHILDHOOD
Although mother and daughter are in a good place now, things were very difficult when Mary was growing up.
Cora, a nurse, struggled with alcoholism and was the victim of domestic abuse at the hands of Mary's father, Thomas Blige.
THE PAIN THAT INSPIRES MARY J. BLIGE'S MUSIC
Mary was molested by a family friend at the age of 5, and would suffer sexual harassment throughout her adolescence. It was this difficult childhood that would be a source of inspiration for her art.
MARY J. BLIGE'S MOM WAS STABBED
In 1987, violence came knocking on Mary's door once again when her mother was stabbed by a neighbor. Even though Cora survived the attack and recovered fully, Mary admitted she was deeply affected by the incident.

Although Mary was married to Martin "Kendu" Isaacs for 15 years, the couple had no children.
Mary's focus is her career, and she has recently announced that her new album "My Life II" will be released in July 2019.
