R. Kelly's Daughter Jaah Was Depressed after Coming out as Transgender at 14
18-year-old Jaah Kelly now identifies herself as a lesbian after first referring to her as a transgender when she was 14. She struggled since then and admits seeking treatment at a mental institution.
R. Kelly’s Daughter Jaah Kelly has been comfortable in her own skin for years now but she wasn’t this way a few years back. The 18-year-old recently admitted she suffered depression and checked into a psych ward when she first came out as a transgender at 14.
R. KELLY REACTS TO JAAH'S 2014 CONFESSION
Back in 2014, R. Kelly reacted to news outlets that inquired about his daughter Jaah who publicly identified herself as a man at the time.
“Don’t even give the blogs that kind of credit. You know what I’m saying? Real talk,” he told WGCI after Jaah, who renamed herself Jay made the announcement on a blog post on Ask.FM.
"When I posted that video, I was so scared. When I was younger, I always felt like I had to make a choice.”
JAAH STRUGGLES AFTER HER ADMISSION
While she was brave enough to admit her sexuality to the world, Jaah now confesses she struggled after. In fact, she told Paper Magazine in a recent interview that she went into deep depression and sought treatment at a psych ward. She was at a mental hospital for three weeks. It was the result of her confusion dealing with her feelings.
“When I posted that video, I was so scared. When I was younger, I always felt like I had to make a choice,” she told the publication. “I knew that I was a girl who liked other girls. But because of what I was taught, I felt like the only way you could like another girl is if you were a boy.”
"It’s up to you how you see me. Either way, I don’t care. I stand in my truth, and why does my truth need a label?”
JAAH COMES TO TERMS WITH HER SEXUALITY
Today, Jaah is more certain about who she is.
“I identify as a lesbian. I know I like girls, but that’s as far as I’ll go to label myself,” she said. “It’s up to you how you see me. Either way, I don’t care. I stand in my truth, and why does my truth need a label?”
"...the unconditional love of a mother is like that of God...There is nothing you could do to earn it and there is nothing you could ever do to lose it."
DREA KELLY SUPPORTS JAAH WITH HER UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
Jaah is lucky she has her mother, Drea Kelly’s full support. She opened up her unconditional love for her daughter.
"I remember when Jaah first came out to me when she was 10 years old. She thought, 'Oh Mama, I was scared to tell you because I didn't think you would love me. But the unconditional love of a mother is like that of God.”
She adds,
“There is nothing you could do to earn it and there is nothing you could ever do to lose it. I told her, 'I love you because you're mine, not because of your orientation. I'm always gonna be here to protect you.' Meantime, live that best life, and live it out loud and in color. Who gives a damn what anybody else thinks?"
LOVE IS LOST BETWEEN JAAH AND HER FATHER
Meanwhile, Jaah probably has no idea what her father thinks of her today since they’ve been estranged for a long time. She even released music that dissed her disgraced father despite their shared talent.
Kelly has had his own demons to face too following the scandal involving his alleged sexual affairs with minors. Last month, he pled not guilty to 11 new counts of sex crimes. He already faced 10 counts of sexual felonies back in February.
