'Today' Co-host Savannah Guthrie Shares Glimpse of Transformation into 'Elphaba' for Halloween
The famous news anchor and TV show host teamed up with one of her “Today” co-hosts to channel two of the most famous witches of American musical theater, and she shared the behind-the-scenes on social media.
48-year-old broadcaster Savannah Guthrie marked 2020’s Halloween on “Today” like the rest of the show’s co-host, paying tribute to Broadway with their costumes, and she paired with 56-year-old Hoda Kotb for a “Wizard of Oz” theme.
Guthrie and Kotb appeared as Elphaba, aka The Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, aka Glinda the Good Witch, respectively, from the musical play “Wicked,” on which the two are close friends before meeting Dorothy.

After revealing this year’s Halloween looks on the small screen the morning of October 30, Guthrie took to her Instagram account to share the process she underwent to become Elphaba for the special episode.
“Becoming Elphaba,” Guthrie simply captioned the four-image snapshot that pictured her at different stages of her characterization, from walking around in her witch dress to have her face covered in bright green paint.
Last year, Guthrie gave us a glimpse of how she rehearsed her “Grease” dance for 2019’s “Today” Halloween show, showing that her children were really involved with the number.
Guthrie seems to be having a great time portraying the iconic villain, and her fans also received the details from her transformation very well, taking to the comments section of the post to share their impressions with her and everybody.
“The green skin really brings out your eyes,” wrote an observant user. “This was my favorite Halloween theme ever!” another fan wrote. “You were especially WICKED!” quipped a third user.
In another Instagram post, Guthrie revealed that her 6-year-old daughter Val also dressed up as a witch for Halloween, wearing a black dress, pointy hat, and shoes, but not painting her adorable little face green.
We are yet to see what Guthrie’s son, 3-year-old Charles, will dress up as during this year’s Halloween, but seeing his older sister’s great costume, we can expect his to be as good.
Last year, Guthrie took to Instagram to mark Halloween at her home, sharing a slideshow of images that revealed her children’s costumes, with Val dressed up as the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, and Charles dressed up as a train conductor.
Proving that her friendship with her “Today” co-host, 38-year-old Jenna Bush Hager, goes way beyond the TV set, Guthrie spent 2019’s Halloween trick or treating with both her children’s and Jenna’s, as the two proud mothers shared in social media.
Being a working mother, Guthrie has to find ways to balance spending quality time with her children with keeping up with her busy schedule, which often includes not only the time she spends taping “Today” but also the time she needs for rehearsals at home.
Last year, Guthrie gave us a glimpse of how she rehearsed her “Grease” dance for 2019’s “Today” Halloween show, showing that her children were really involved with the number, to the point of the two reenacting one of the scenes from the film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
