Prince Harry revealed that his father, Prince Charles, and his brother Prince William are trapped within the royal family institution as he discussed his relationship with them in the bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Prince Harry opened up about his strained relationship with his father, Prince Charles, and his brother Prince William in the tell-all interview he and Meghan had with media mogul Oprah Winfrey on Sunday.
Addressing their decision to step back as senior members of the royal family, Harry noted that he and Meghan lacked support from the family and decided to take matters into their hands regarding their mental health.
The Duke of Sussex mentioned that he felt trapped in the monarchy institution and didn't even realize it until Meghan came into his life. He added that both his brother and father have a similar experience. In his words:
"I was trapped, but I didn't know I was trapped. Trapped within the system like the rest of the family. My father and my brother are trapped. They don't get to leave…"
When Winfrey asked why he felt that way even though photos showed him as happy whenever in public, Harry answered, saying it was part of the job. The soon-to-be father also dished on the current state of his relationship with Charles and William.
In the conversation with Oprah, Harry also revealed that he and Meghan were cut off financially.
During the conversation, the prince dropped a bombshell about his father, disclosing that Charles stopped picking his calls when the topic of him and Meghan stepping down came up. Harry confessed that he felt let down by his father.
The 36-year-old noted that things are strained between him and Prince Charles as there is a lot of work and healing to be done. Nevertheless, he always loves his father and would keep striving to fix their relationship.
Regarding his rapport with William, Harry mentioned that he loves his brother dearly as they have been through rough times together. However, their relationship at the moment can be described as "space" as they are now on different paths.
Fans may recall that reports of a rift between the brothers first surfaced in November 2018 when Harry and Meghan decided to move out of their joint residence in Kensington Palace, which they shared with the Cambridges.
By March 2019, amid rumors that Kate and Meghan weren't getting along, the Sussexes announced their decision to split their household. By June of that year, Harry and Meghan resigned from The Royal Foundation to start their charity.
It, however, wasn't until October that Harry confirmed the tension between him and William during the ITV documentary, "Harry and Meghan: An African Journey," saying they were on different life paths.
In the conversation with Oprah, Harry also revealed that he and Meghan were cut off financially and their official security stripped, surviving only on the money his late mother, Princess Diana, left him.
Last September, it was reported that theSussexes achieved financial independence
after they successfully paid off the $3 million renovation costs of their Frogmore Cottage home funded by taxpayers. They also stopped relying on Charles financially.
