On Sunday, September 19, 2021, Tom Ford, 60, lost his husband, Richard Buckley, at the age of 72. In a statement, Ford revealed the longtime fashion journalist died after being together for 35 years.

Buckley passed on “peacefully” at the couple’s Los Angeles home. He was surrounded and comforted by his husband and their young son, Alexander “Jack” John Buckley Ford, 9, as he died from natural causes.

The statement also revealed that Buckley passed away after battling a prolonged illness. The fashion journalist who started his career in 1979 at New York Magazine was born in New York’s Binghamton.

Part of his growth happened in France, the US, and Germany. He did his schooling in Munich by attending the University of Maryland before starting his successful career.

Buckley had the pleasure of working for various magazines and newspapers in his lifetime. He worked and learned under the leadership of editors that included Tina Brown, John B. Fairchild, and Grace Mirabella.

In 1999, he had his breakthrough when he got himself an editor in chief position at Vogue Hommes International. He has been living in Santa Fe, Los Angeles and New York in recent years.

Buckley met Ford at a fashion show in 1986. In 2014, the couple made their relationship official by getting married, and two years later, the fashion designer opened up about the moment he fell for Buckley.

He told People he fell in love with the fashion editor immediately when they locked eyes. That moment defined their relationship because, within a month, Ford and Buckley were living together. The “A Single Man” director lovingly confessed they were together since then.

Ford might be in mourning right now, but he was a very busy man earlier in the month getting ready for the New York Fashion Week. His spring/summer 2022 collection left audiences dazzled and in awe as he delivered satins and sequins in his pieces.

Ford’s work was meant to embody the idea of going out again amid the COVID-19 pandemic. His collection was set in the David Koch Theater and had hints of casual mixed with evening wear.

The designer explained that the collection was inspired by his son’s desire to wear basketball silk attire to his school. Ford embraced his son’s trend but turned the sporty look into women’s eveningwear.
