Mina Starsiak Hawk's road to becoming a mother wasn't an easy one. Doctors believed she had almost a zero chance of becoming pregnant while trying for a second child after the first one was deemed a miracle.

Mina Starsiak met Stephen Hawk on Facebook through mutual friends. She'd seen a photo of Stephen and thought he looked cute before she met him physically.

Mina and Stephen were at a basketball game with a group of friends, and she recalled how he ignored her all night. Stephen seemed unbothered when his friends hit on Mina.

Despite being ignored, Mina still managed to get Stephen's number. Showing how determined she was to build a relationship with him, she texted this ultimatum, "We're going to try this again tomorrow—you get one more shot."

Mina's mother, Karen E. Laine's initial impression of Stephen was better than her daughter's. However, her second impression of her daughter's boyfriend wasn't great, with Laine explaining how the pair went through a "difficult time" at the start of their relationship.

Laine revealed that after dating, the couple broke up for a while because Stephen "behaved really badly—in a phenomenally bad way." Laine didn't elaborate on what Stephen did.

The couple decided to give their relationship another chance, and this time Laine warned Stephen not to hurt her daughter again, or he would have to deal with her. Mina also vowed that her boyfriend would have to contest with her too.

The actress' mother joked that they knew how to "hide a body." It seemed the threat worked because Stephen eventually did right by Mina, and the pair took the next step in their relationship.

MINA AND STEPHEN'S ENGAGEMENT AND MARRIAGE

Stephen ended up proposing to Mina in 2015. He prepared his proposal by first sending Mina on a scavenger hunt and then asking her hand in marriage on the 50-yard-line of the Indianapolis Colts' training field.

On June 11, 2016, the couple tied the knot in Indianapolis, Indiana, where Mina was based. The "Good Bones" star wasn't too nervous on the special day and described herself as a "laid-back" bride.

She had some of her friends help with specific details like buying her wedding day shoes. They bought her three pairs of shoes from T.J. Maxx the day before the wedding, all under $30.

The actress wore a Romona Keveza gown and a veil for the ceremony. Laine, a lawyer and a licensed minister who's already officiated many weddings married the couple.

Mina was a bit nervous when she and Stephen had to participate in their first dance. The duo had practiced for it for more than ten weeks by taking ballroom dancing classes together.

The wedding reception was held at the city's 1899 building. Mina wasn't a cake fan, so she had 400 Long's Donuts in its place, and because they wanted it to feel like a party, the couple had tacos, Chicago-style hot dogs, and mini sliders on the menu.

WELCOMING THEIR FIRST CHILD

The announcement of Mina's pregnancy with her first child occurred on her HGTV show in June 2019. The actress decided to tell her husband the good news in one of the episodes.

In the "Mina's Forever Home" special, Mina approached Stephen in their kitchen while he was eating breakfast. In the middle of eating eggs, toast, and bacon, she pretended that she wanted to discuss the house they were building together.

Mina told her husband that the new house would be necessary for their relationship as it would be the first one they looked at together. She thought it would be nice having the second home since Stephen moved into the first one, which was her own.

The star noted how he probably felt like he was living in her world in the first house, and the second one would be something they did together. She said they had a dog and now a home together.

Then she got down to the nitty-gritty by informing Stephen that she had a gift for him for the new house. She handed him a small tan polka-dotted box tied with a white ribbon.

Inside, Stephen found two baby slippers, and standing above him was his wife, who held two positive pregnancy tests! The star's husband couldn't help but cry as he understood what she told him.

The television show aired much later after the actual birth. Mina and her husband welcomed baby Jack Richard Hawk in August 2018, at 4:15 a.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana, with the boy weighing over 6 pounds and was 19 inches in length.

Mina announced the birth of her child with an Instagram post. She shared several images of her posing with Jack and nursing him at the hospital and some of Stephen proudly holding his son.

STRUGGLING TO GET PREGNANT FOR THE SECOND TIME

In 2020, Mina told People magazine that she became pregnant almost immediately after stopping birth control and that conceiving was "super easy." However, when the couple tried for their second child, things didn't go as smoothly as the first one.

Stephen and Mina tried for months before seeing a fertility specialist. The reality television star had an Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) test that assessed her egg count or ovarian reserve.

Mina's AMH range was 0.25 compared to a 35-year-old woman's, ranging from 1.5 to 4 ng/mL. She started having fertility treatments and had a round of in vitro fertilization (IVF) that failed.

A doctor told her she had a one percent chance of conceiving, leaving her shocked, and she thought, "All of a sudden, your dream could be over." The couple asked the doctor how Jack was conceived so easily and was told: "it was a miracle."

Speaking to People magazine, she revealed that she'd planned to have two children. She even had a house floor plan that included a playroom and two children's bedrooms, with Mina adding:

"We’re supposed to be a big family. I wasn’t just mourning the loss of a child but this whole dream.”

The couple decided to get a second opinion and met with a Carmel, Indiana, fertility specialist, Dr. Robert Colver. After having their initial laboratory assessment, the results were promising.

In September 2020, the couple [Mina Starsiak and Stephen Hawk] welcomed a baby girl named Charlotte Drew Hawk.

Mina was too late into her cycle to start a new IVF round and didn't want to wait so they opted for intrauterine insemination (IUI) or a natural, non-medicated procedure. A few weeks later, a test proved she was pregnant!

She confirmed to People that she was pregnant with her second child in March 2020. The actress revealed that she was excited and that she and her husband were feeling "incredibly lucky."

WELCOMING THEIR SECOND CHILD

When Mina informed Stephen that they were finally pregnant, he was shocked because he'd believed the doctor about their chances of conceiving! The couple would now be able to fulfill their dream of giving Jack a sibling, but at the time, the HGTV star felt it was all unreal, however:

"When we heard the heartbeat, there were so many happy tears.”

In September 2020, the couple welcomed a baby girl named Charlotte Drew Hawk. Like when Jack was born, Mina took to her Instagram account to share the first photos of the little girl after their previous doctor's wrong diagnosis.

The child was photographed at the hospital with both proud parents. One of the images showed Stephen holding his newborn child to his bare chest to form skin-to-skin contact just like he once did with his son.
