Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been married for decades, and their marriage keeps growing stronger. The "Cast Away" actor has always supported his wife during life's ups and downs. He has never shied away from demonstrating his support for his wife, even though it means showing his rough side.

Hanks and Wilson met when they appeared in the 1985 comedy "Volunteers" where Hanks played Lawrence Bourne III, and Wilson played Beth Wexler. A year later, the two walked down the aisle.

Unlike most Hollywood unions, Hank and Wilson's marriage goes beyond just the basic definition of marriage. They have supported each other through the gnawing ups and downs life has thrown at them and emerged even more potent and closer than before.

Speaking to Oprah, Hanks explained that he views Wilson as more than his lover, and their bond surpasses simple pet names such as wife, girlfriend, or mother. He shared that because of her support, he could undertake several projects, using his love and feelings for his wife to execute his roles flawlessly.

Wilson has stood by her husband through his rise to fame until he became one of Hollywood's most sought-after actors. Yet, Hank never forgets to thank her for her contribution to his success. Every time he gets a chance, he ensures to declare his love and thank Wilson for being the force behind his success. He told Oprah:

"I have a woman who teaches me what love is every day. Maybe that sentiment is possible to fake, but for me, it's really true."

A UNION THAT HAS WEATHERED ALL STORMS

While Hollywood marriages always happen, seeing one that lasts decades is not common. Hanks and Wilson have gone against the grain and proven that their marriage is for the long haul.

The "Terminal" actor says that Wilson is his best friend besides being his lover. Their relationship has always been that way since they began dating and, like wine, only gets better with time.

However, in as much as they have remained firm in their union, Hanks shared that they did not have a secret to their long and happy partnership, saying:

"Every now and again, you know, you gotta get over some stuff, but life is one damn thing after another, and it's actually more pleasant to be able to go home with someone you like to spend time with in order to get with it."

While the star has figured out how to release blockbuster movies back to back, he says he still cannot pinpoint the secret to his happy marriage. He shared that he is still in awe that Wilson goes out with him.

He, however, wishes to dispute the narrative that marriage is hard work. He says it is not. And while he has no pointers for a happy marriage, he advises that no one should get married before 30.

HANKS ALMOST LOST HIS WIFE

While Hank and Wilson's marriage appears perfect and untainted, it is not all roses. The star almost lost the love of his life after her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015.

The actress had to undergo a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Yet through all her hard times, Hanks stood by her side, supporting her every step of the way.

She told People that she felt blessed to have her husband, family and friends support her through it all and was grateful for the medical advances that helped her seek and receive treatment. At the time, she shared that she improved with each passing day and looked forward to renewed health.

Neither Hanks nor Wilson had suffered such a severe illness before Wilson's cancer diagnosis, so it was a tough time for them. Nevertheless, while it did not seem like it at the time, her condition brought them closer, as Wilson would say:

"You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this. I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me. It was such a normal intimate time."

Over the years, they have learned to shut down tabloids spewing non-facts about their marriage, and so after going through such a rough patch with Wilson's illness, they now consider their marriage "sacred."

HANKS CONTINUES TO SUPPORT AND PROTECT HIS WIFE

Hanks and Wilson's love story has been unwavering for years, and even after so long, they still have not lost the spark in their union.

Hanks continues supporting and caring for his wife, even in public settings. Recently, the star found himself in an unsavory situation when he scolded a fan for bumping into his wife and almost knocking her over.

The couple was in a New York City lobby when one of the fans in a crowd that had gathered outside bumped into Wilson, pushing her forward. The actress stumbled forward and gasped, then turned around and said:

"Stop it!"

Rushing to his wife's rescue, Hanks yelled at the group to back off and quit knocking over his wife. In the video that has since gone viral, posted on Extra TV's YouTube channel, one fan can be heard saying he was pushed forward by the group.

After Hanks yelled at them, asking what they were doing, and his security tried to calm him down, several fans in the crowd then apologized as Hanks and Wilson got into their car.

As happens with such instances, there was a divided opinion on whether Hanks had done right to yell. Some people felt it had been rude of him to scream.

Others, however, felt that the person responsible for "knocking" Wilson over had no respect for personal space and that they deserved what came to them.

Legendary professional basketball player Lebron James felt the incident happened due to an invasion of personal space and fully supported Hanks's reaction. He mused that if the opposite had happened, Hanks would have been deemed wrong and probably gotten sued.
