Fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen and her spouse, Olivier Sarkozy, met at a party. The couple was first photographed out and about in 2012.

Olsen and Sarkozy's first public outing was when they attended the 2013 Take Home a Nude Benefit art auction and party at Sotheby's in New York City on October 8, 2013. Since then, the pair rarely made public appearances.

As a duo, Olsen and Sarkozy differed in terms of personalities. He was more outgoing, and she was more reserved. The former child prodigy admitted that it was advantageous for the banker to be more social because he could entertain while she preferred keeping to herself.

"When they did go out, she preferred to go out late at night. For example, they would have midnight dinners at Nobu. She also liked being in the Hamptons because there was more privacy for her there, and she could ride her horses," a source revealed to Entertainment Tonight.

The insider added that Sarkozy and Olsen were both ambitious, hardworking, and intelligent individuals with mutual respect. Though they had a 17-year age gap, it was not a factor because they had friends that "span a wide range of ages, and it didn't seem to be a big deal to them," said the source.

Moreover, Sarkozy reportedly managed to push his wife out of her comfort zone, and his bold personality played a significant role in doing that:

"He had a way of making her feel comfortable even in scenarios she would normally like to avoid. He is very funny and charming and personable."

In the early stages of their romance, Olsen had already formed a bond with Sarkozy's kids. In August 2013, she was spotted with his daughter in New York in the Tribeca neighborhood. Sarkozy's child towered over Olsen and made it evident by placing her hand on her shoulder.

Two years after dating, the father of two asked for Olsen's hand in marriage. People reported in March 2014 that the couple was engaged. The "Full House" star was photographed wearing her enormous engagement ring while strolling the streets of New York City.

A source revealed that Sarkozy and Olsen had been engaged for a while before the news became public knowledge:

"They were engaged for a bit before it came out. The couple has been enjoying their new status under the radar in Jamaica, where they vacationed for the last few weeks of February."

Us Weekly reported in February 2014 that it would be Olsen's first marriage and the second for the French native. Sarkozy was previously married to Charlotte Bernard from 1997 to 2011. The former couple welcomed kids Julien and Margot. In addition, an insider revealed the impact Olsen made in Sarkozy's life:

"Mary-Kate has made him a better father. She remembers all the kids' special events. She thinks he's a great dad."

The source divulged that Olsen's family sang Sarkozy's praises, "Mary-Kate's family thinks Olivier is the best thing to happen to her."

The lovebirds secretly tied the knot in November 2015. Olsen reportedly did not invite her co-stars from "Full House," Dave Coulier, who played her on-screen uncle, Joey Gladstone, and Bob Saget, who played her father, Danny Tanner.

Both actors expressed well wishes for the then-newlyweds and shared there were no hard feelings after being snubbed from the special occasion.

Olsen and Sarkozy exchanged wedding vows in an intimate ceremony in Manhattan. They had their reception at a private residence on 49th Street and had cocktails served in a garden.

A total of 50 guests wined and dined indoors afterward. The couple went for "bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes, and everyone smoked the whole night," a source told Page Six of the event.

Olsen later openly talked about their marital life, sharing they had struck a balance between maintaining their hectic work schedules. "I think we're lucky [working hard] comes quite naturally for us. We don't need so much time to sit and think and ponder," she said.

The California native explained that after a long day at work, she would come home to cook dinner for her husband and two stepchildren, adding that on the weekends, she rode horses.

Olsen is an equestrian in her free time. In September 2017, the "It Takes Two" star participated in the Hampton Classic Horse Show held in Bridgehampton, New York. Her adoring spouse Sarkozy was present to cheer her on. She finished third in the competition.

Olsen showed off her equestrian skills in a show jumping competition in May 2019 when she partook in the International Global Champions Tour at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. Once again, Sarkozy was there to support her.

As a married couple, the pair led a private life and hardly smiled for photographers, except for one instance when they were spotted celebrating the Minnie Muse blog relaunch in NYC. The two were pictured cuddling and grinning at one another.

Moreover, Olsen and Sarkozy never fully settled down as a married couple. A source revealed to ET that they resided in the East Village and then later rented a place downtown before eventually moving into a townhouse in Midtown East which was reportedly a dream home the duo remodeled.

THEIR MESSY SPLIT

While it seemed like the couple was in marital bliss, Olsen and Sarkozy's marriage took an unexpected turn when they split. Page Six reported in May 2020 that The Row designer was filing for divorce from Sarkozy, alleging that he was "brutally" attempting to kick her out of their home in NYC amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Documents filed by Olsen on April 17, 2020, stated that she signed a summons and complaint for divorce, as "it was clear my marriage was over, the relationship has irretrievably broken down." To her dismay, the New York courts were not then open for divorce filings.

As a resort, Olsen decided to ask the Supreme Court to allow her to file an emergency petition for a divorce. "My husband has terminated the lease on our New York City residence without my consent," she revealed.

The "Switching Goals" star explained that the process had to be fast-tracked because Sarkozy wanted her to move out of their home effective immediately at the time. It was a cause of concern for her because the city was barely functioning due to the worldwide pandemic.

Sarkozy, a half-brother to France's former president, Nicolas Sarkozy, gave his wife until May 18, 2020, to leave the property, but she asked for an extension till May 30.

In addition, Olsen requested for their prenuptial agreement to be enforced. A source later revealed to ET that the divorce between the estranged couple was "brutal."

Despite Olsen's pleas to fast forward the separation, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Katz ruled against it. She filed an emergency petition because it was her only way of safeguarding her property if she were to file. It would have automatically prevented Sarkozy from disposing of their abode.

Seeing that she lost the bid, a judge ruled that her case was "not essential." New York courts spokesman Lucian Chalfen told People that they only accepted emergency cases for filing. Olsen later expressed her fears in documents filed, stating the issue was terrifying:

"I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home we have lived in, and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well."

SARKOZY MOVED IN HIS EX, KIDS, & HIS MOTHER

The same month Sarkozy asked Olsen to leave their marital home, he then had his former wife, Bernard, with their kids and his mother move into the five-bedroomed mansion, multiple sources disclosed to Page Six:

"Olivier was concerned for the safety of his family in New York during the pandemic. He insisted to Mary-Kate that he wanted to bring his ex-wife, their kids, and his mother from the city to Bridgehampton."

The insider added that while Olsen had no issues welcoming Sarkozy's children, it became overwhelming for her to live with his former spouse during the pandemic.

Another source highlighted that there was nothing romantically going on between Sarkozy and Bernard as he wanted to keep his family safe. Notably, Bernard frequently slept over at the former couple's home on holidays and birthdays. Their kids come first even with a divorce, and Bernard was even present at her ex-husband and Olsen's wedding.

As for what led to Sarkozy and Olsen's divorce, a source revealed the pair grew apart, adding nothing involving infidelity played a part in the dissolution of their marriage. However, his decision to move in with his family was a sign of moving on.

Meanwhile, Sarkozy's previous divorce from Bernard was also reported to have been messy, but the duo remained cordial. Subsequently, the divorce proceedings went smoothly, and while he was ordered to pay Bernard 10 percent, he gave her 50 instead. Since then, they have been friendly.

That said, Olsen filed for divorce for the second time when the courts reopened and began accepting new cases electronically. In January 2021, ET reported that she and Sarkozy settled their divorce after five years of marriage but refrained from revealing details of the settlement.

"The agreement was reached amicably," and "everyone is looking forward to moving on," an insider revealed at the time. The source added that Olsen was relieved to put everything behind her finally and that she and Sarkozy had no bad feelings towards each other.

Before finalizing the divorce, Olsen had already started dating in October 2020 but was reportedly not in a serious relationship. Two months prior, a source had told ET that the "Weeds" star was not ready to return to the dating scene because finding love was not yet a priority for her.
