Doctors Told Mom Son Wouldn’t Live past 11 - He Celebrated 62nd Birthday Defying All Odds
When a woman gave birth to her sweet boy, she said the doctors told her he wouldn't get far in life. Feeling deeply upset and broken at the time, the mother vowed not to give up on her son. Years later, she realized she had made the right choice.
Joey Wittkugle from Struthers, Ohio, was special in many ways. He was born with Down syndrome, a genetic condition characterized by a distinct facial appearance and delays in intellectual, cognitive, and developmental abilities.
Joey's mother, Bobbi Wittkugle, remembered the day she welcomed him into her life as if it was yesterday. It was a time she would never forget — a day that presented her with a life-altering choice.

A Painful Prediction
The day Bobbi from Struthers, Ohio, gave birth to her beloved Joey, she recalled that the doctors came to talk to her, without asking her name, and told her:
"You have to put him away. He'll never talk. He'll never walk. He'll never know who you are."
Those words were so painful that they crushed the poor mother's heart. But the doctors were still not done talking. They told Bobbi, "[Joey] will live to the age of 11, and that will be the end of it."

Feeling Upset
While the doctor's opinion upset the then-new mom, she admitted it was nothing new at the time. Back in those days, Bobbi said it was difficult for people to accept and welcome babies with Down syndrome or other genetic conditions.
As Bobbi watched the parade go by, her eyes welled with tears.
During an interview with WGN TV in 2020, Bobbi noted that 62 years ago, nobody knew about children with Down syndrome because they were hardly seen walking in public.

Worthy of Love
For some time, Bobbi struggled with what to do. But the Ohio woman said she knew how to proceed after her conversation with a priest who told her:
"Bobbi, you were gifted by God, you were chosen by God to have this child. You can't turn your back on him."
The woman noted that the priest helped her realize that Joey was unique and deserved to be loved and cherished. As time went by, Bobbi understood the true purpose of her lovely boy's arrival into her life.
The Celebration
On June 29, 2020, Joey celebrated his 62nd birthday, defying the odds and proving his critics wrong. To ring in the special occasion, his family arranged a birthday parade in his honor on June 28 at the Fifth Street Plaza in Struthers, near Save A Lot.
Bobbi, then almost 90, said she held the parade to let people know that children like Joey are unique and deserve extra love and attention. She expressed:
"When you see one of our children, don't turn your back at them like they did years ago. They are human, they are special from God and please learn to love them as much as they love you."

A Memorable Occasion
Joey's birthday parade turned out to be a grand affair, filled with love, emotions, and triumph. Almost 100 cars, trucks, motorcycles, and first responders drove by to wish the Struthers man a happy birthday, and he was all smiles.
Even the Struthers' mayor drove behind a police cruiser. As Bobbi watched the parade go by, her eyes welled with tears. She was overcome with emotions upon seeing how many people turned up to support her son. She urged:
"I wish people today [to know that] if you have this child and your family wants to do something like this, don't say no."

"I Love You"
Joey's facial expressions showed how much he loved his family's surprise. His mom sat right next to him and was seen planting a tender kiss on his face, after which she uttered, "I love you."
Those three magical words encapsulated a mom's unwavering devotion to her beloved son, who changed her life for the best.
