Beautiful Stories of Couples That Display the Meaning of True Love
With so many stories of terror, heartbreak, and strife worldwide, it can be pretty difficult to believe in love. But these stories will make you trust in the power of love again.
We often see the best love stories on screen or paper without realizing that often, the best are those that happen in real life. These real-life romantic stories will tug on your heartstrings and restore your faith in true love.
From inter-abled couples to a beautifully inspiring couple with Down syndrome, these love stories have stood the test of time. They prove that even in a world full of heartbreak and chaos, there are still many inspiring testaments of love worth emulating. Let's get right to them.
Turia Pitt and Michael Hoskin
Turia Pitt went through a traumatic, life-changing incident just two years after meeting her then-boyfriend Michael Hoskin. During an ultramarathon in Western Australia, Turia burned 64% of her body in a wildfire, altering her appearance forever.
While her accident could have easily changed the course of their relationship, Michael stood by Turia through it all. They have ups and downs like any other couple, but they love one another for their good and bad qualities, which strengthened their love through the years.
During Turia's recovery, Michael realized he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He had bought her an engagement ring while she was in the ICU recuperating.
By 2017, the pair welcomed their first son, Havakai. They welcomed their second son Rahiti in 2021 and are now "living their best life." Speaking about their relationship, Turia said:
"This may sound naff, but we're living our best lives and we're happy. We have these beautiful kids together, and while we're not perfect, we accept each other."
Shane and Hannah Aylward
Hannah Aylward made sure to slam all the haters who accused her of marrying her husband, Shane Burcaw, for money. People assumed this was the case because Hannah, an able-bodied woman, chose to marry Shane, who is disabled and suffers from a neuromuscular disease.
After Hannah posted a photo of them from their wedding, people on the internet left offensive messages that insulted the couple's love. However, Hannah made sure to let them all know that she pays no attention to their comments and that their love is as real as it gets.
In fact, it was Hannah who first reached out to Shane after seeing the documentary on his life. Hannah messaged Shane, complimenting him on his writing skills and his sense of humor. After a while, she admitted that she thought he was cute.
They eventually exchanged calls and messages with one another before falling in love. They then started a YouTube channel together, hoping to show people that disabled people are worthy partners in life, too. Speaking about it, Hannah said:
"Shane and I continue to make content and share our story with the hopes of showing as many people as we can that disabled people are worthy partners."
Maryanne and Tommy Pilling
When Maryanne and Tommy Pilling married in 1995, they faced heavy criticism for their decision. They were the first partners with Down syndrome ever to get married in the United Kingdom, and they've proven through the years that they made the right decision as they remain happily married to this day.
Speaking about his love for his partner of almost three decades brings Tommy Pilling to tears. When they went on the show "This Morning" to talk about their relationship, Tommy teared up as he declared: "I do love her."
On another occasion, Maryanne and Tommy shared their secrets to a happy marriage. The couple revealed that they'd often do fun things together, like going to the cinema, going on dinner dates, cooking and baking, shopping, and even bowling!
They also make sure to let each other know how much they love one another. Maryanne tells Tommy she loves him at least three times a day, which Tommy also reciprocates. What an inspiring couple!
John and Jade Reynolds
John Reynolds adores his wife, Jade, so when he gets "outrageous" questions about the dynamics of their relationship, it bothers him a whole lot. He's been asked the most insensitive questions, like whether he likes people in wheelchairs or if the couple is intimate with one another.
His wife Jade was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis, which has affected her spinal cord since she was 12. This did not stop John from falling in love with her when they met at Bible college, and he eventually married her.
Faith has been a significant part of John and Jade's relationship, and it keeps them grounded despite all the attention their relationship brings. Instead of dwelling on people's comments about them, they choose to forgive. Talking about it, John said:
"We're Christians, so we forgive people who make ignorant comments. We believe all people are made in the image of God and are loved by God."
From unwanted touches to Jade's legs to asking if she could "feel" the touch to questions about their intimacy and parenting, the couple has had to deal with some of the most intrusive comments through the years. "A lot of people still feel entitled to know the answers to these questions," John noted.
John and Jade choose to use their platform as a means to educate people about disability. They credit their faith for making them strong enough to do so, especially since it comes with some unwarranted comments. Despite it all, what John and Jade know for sure is that disability doesn't reduce one's worth as a human being.
These beautiful stories show us the true meaning of unconditional love – love that knows no boundaries, limitations, or conditions. Through hell and high waters, through sickness, and in health, these couples have stood by their vows to one another and are determined to make their relationships work until the end of their days.
