David "Dave" Goodings loves his grandmother, Iris Howard, with all his heart and soul. They are incredibly close and cherish each other's company—something that wasn't lost on their friends, family, acquaintances, and even strangers who saw them together.

One day in July 2016, the young man decided to take his dear grandma for a drive, and she happily agreed. Unbeknownst to Iris, her grandson wasn't just taking her on a road trip but had prepared a special surprise meant solely for her. Let's take a look at the complete story.

A Breaking News Interrupted the Broadcast

Being a radio presenter from the UK, it was only befitting that David wanted his grandmother to listen to the radio, and that was precisely what he made her do. During their drive, he switched radio stations until he decided to stick to one; all Iris knew by this time was that her grandchild was searching for something good to listen to.

Interestingly, this wasn't the only instance when David did a little something for his affectionate grandma.

Suddenly, the radio jockey interrupted the broadcast with the words, "Breaking news just in." Iris was still blissfully oblivious to what was happening, but David's soft cackle hinted that something big was coming up. What happened next was definitely what the young man had planned for all along.

Wishing the Birthday Girl

"Iris Howard is celebrating her birthday," continued the broadcast, and when the unsuspecting grandma heard her name, she was baffled. It didn't take much time for her to connect the dots and realize that her thoughtful grandson had prepared a surprise for her.

As she managed to keep herself composed, the DJ continued to describe her as a wonderful person who had won the best nan competition for ten years. Iris' emotions were all over the place as the presenter showered her with praise and appreciation. But there was more.

Messages from Loved Ones & Going Viral

The DJ announced that there were some messages for the birthday girl. With tears of happiness streaming down her face, Iris heard touching greetings from her daughter, grandkids, and friends worldwide. Having no strength over her emotions, she had a total meltdown and began looking for napkins in her bag.

As David watched his devoted grandma struggling with tears, he told her not to get emotional, to which she replied, "I can't help it."

The young radio presenter shared a video from the heart-melting moment on his official YouTube channel on July 22, 2016, where it became a viral sensation. Other media outlets, including Daily Mail and Today, also picked up the story.

A part of the caption read, "I thought I would do something a little bit different for my nan this year." David said that once his grandma was in the car, she received the biggest shock of her life.

Another Special Surprise from Miles Away

Iris' 86th birthday had turned into a memorable affair, but to her astonishment, David had one last surprise up his sleeve. What could it be? He told his grandma that he was "gutted" because he couldn't get through to one person—Iris' brother, who lived in Australia.

Afterward, David tuned in to another radio station and watched as his loving grandma broke down. The voice on the radio was that of Iris' brother, and after wishing her a happy birthday, he narrated an adorable story from their past. Undoubtedly, the elderly lady experienced an unforgettable day, all thanks to her grandson.

Making His Grandma Feel Special

Later, David told his grandmother that he didn't want to upset her but only wished to make her feel special and loved. It was his way of repaying her for all the love, care, and affection she had given them throughout her life.

Iris's emotional response made it crystal clear that she loved the surprise and was grateful for her loving family, especially her beloved grandson. Interestingly, this wasn't the only instance when David did a little something for his affectionate grandma.

Grandma's Reaction to the Proposal Video

When he proposed to the love of his life in April 2022, David recorded the moment and showed the video to Iris because she couldn't witness it in person. As was expected, the grandma sobbed as she doted on her dear grandson. A part of the caption read:

"A few of you heard the speech that I posted on Sunday and have asked about my Nan! She's all good but I'm gutted she couldn’t make it on the night. We visited Nan the following day to show her the ring and tell her all about it. I love this video."

Surprising Grandma with an Advent Calendar

Another of David's touching surprises for his grandmother included an advent calendar he gave her on December 1, 2022. He even captured the moment Iris sat in her chair and opened the calendar, smiling the whole time. The Instagram post's caption read:

"When we were younger, my Nan would always buy us advent calendars. This year, I've got her one where for the next 24 days she can open up an envelope which has a family photo, memory, poem or special message inside."

We hope David and Iris continue to share many blissful and memorable moments. As for us, we're not crying but struggling with a bit of dust in our eyes! If you loved this story, please share your feedback on Facebook.
