Mark Wahlberg presenting a Screen Actors Guild award to the predominantly Asian cast of "Everything Everywhere All at Once" on February 27, 2023, seemed like a tone-death choice in light of him having been convicted for his hate crime against Asians.

Rhea Wahlberg reposted a meme a day later that some deemed a response to the backlash against her husband, which said: "Let whoever think whatever. Just keep getting better." The comment section lit up supporting the former Victoria's Secret model.

A former addict said that a sponsor told them that other's options were none of their business, and a fan was glad that the mother of four was the one to post the message. One commenter warned her not to sacrifice who she is for a man not as invested in the relationship.

Mark Wahlberg Faced Criticism Online as One Writer Said He Should Have Turned down the Gig

In 1988 Mark beat two Vietnamese men "over a case of beer," a felony which landed him in prison for 45 days. Through his manager, he issued an apology in 1993, "Racist slurs and language were used during these encounters. And people were seriously hurt. I am truly sorry for what I did."

Jeff Yang, an Asian-American columnist for the Wall Street Journal, reckoned that Mark should have rejected the request to host a category where the film led by Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan was a favorite to win.

Mark Wahlberg says they "share the same values," which keeps them together.

On Twitter, a commentator compared the inappropriateness of the "Ted" actor being asked to present ensemble category to if Will Smith had hypothetically presented Best Actress.

Emmy-Award-winning writer Kim Horcher asked if it was the same Mark Wahlberg who almost beat two Vietnamese men to death, while another viewer called the move embarrassing for Hollywood.

The managing editor InsideHook, Bonnie Stiernberg, tweeted facetiously that it was "certainly a choice." A UK journalist used a gif from "Tár" to illustrate the awkward situation.

Mark and Rhea met at a New York City press junket of one of his films in 2001. She responded in the affirmative when he asked her out and didn't change her answer when he asked her to go to St. Patrick's Cathedral the following day.

The couple had three children, Ella Rae Wahlberg on September 2, 2003, Michael Wahlberg on March 22, 2006, and Brendan Joseph Wahlberg on September 16, 2008, before tying the knot on August 1, 2009. They welcomed their fourth child, Grace Margaret Wahlberg, on January 11, 2010.
