Mary Poole – Robert Smith's Only Wife and the Muse He's Shared His Whole Life With

Mary Poole is Robert Smith's wife. While she and the English singer have been married for over two decades, the lovebirds don't have any children. The pair decided not to have kids in their marriage.

Poole's husband is best known as the lead singer of the rock band, The Cure. The singer is famously known for hit songs, "Lullaby," "A Forest," "Lovesong," and more. While Poole and Smith have been married for 34 years, they're happy without kids.

Smith once revealed that he and his wife were comfortable with their decision not to have children of their own. He stated he didn't feel responsible enough to bring a child into this world. Here is what we know about Robert Smith's wife, Mary Poole.

Mary Poole Met Her Only Love in School

Poole and Robert studied at St. Wilfrid's. They first crossed paths during a drama class when Poole agreed to partner with Smith for a drama project. With time, they became inseparable and closely bonded through their shared interests in music and film.

Robert Smith's wife was always by his side and had the same musical taste as the singer. When Smith began his music career, Poole was already working and would bring him cocktails. Poole held several jobs; besides working as a model, she also worked as a nurse to help mentally disabled children.

Poole also appeared on the cover album of "Charlotte Sometimes.” The photo was taken by Smith when they visited a Scottish Castle in 1980.

However, she later quit her job and joined Smith on his tours after he became a successful singer. In 1985, the lovebirds finally decided to move in together after dating for 15 years.

Mary Poole Married after 15 Years of Dating but Has Never Had Children

Poole and Smith tied the knot on August 13, 1988, after being together for a decade and a half. According to Smith, their decision to get married came about because, after knowing Poole for more than half his life, he wanted to see her walk down the aisle.

Also, he said after many years of being together, he wanted to make it official in front of their families. Smith's wedding gift to Poole was a love song.

The singer stated that while Poole may have preferred diamonds, he felt she would one day look back and be happy that he gifted her a song. The lovebirds held their wedding in Worth Abbey. Smith's other band members were present, with Simon Gallup as the best man.

Even after being together for many years, Smith wasn't ready for fatherhood. The singer knew he didn't want to have kids at 12. When he told his parents about his decision, it didn't sit well with his father, and he slapped him.

Poole's husband once revealed that he and his two older siblings have a huge age difference. He stated that he felt he was an unplanned child and that his younger sister Janet was conceived mainly to give him company.

So for Smith, he felt he was too irresponsible to bring a kid into this world and that he and Poole were happy without children.

They, however, did "adopt" two children, a Guatemalan girl, and a Haitian boy, through the World Vision program. Also, Smith said he had the pleasure of being surrounded by many of his nephews and nieces.

Mary Poole Influenced Robert and The Cure a Lot

Robert Smith's wife accepts him the way he is. Besides influencing his career and band, The Cure, she was also his muse, and he dedicated most of his love songs to her.

Poole also appeared on the cover album of "Charlotte Sometimes." The photo was taken by Smith when they visited a Scottish Castle in 1980. Smith is among famous English singers; others include David Bowie, John Lennon, etc.
