Is Hozier Gay? The Singer's Sexuality and Dating Life Explored
Popular Irish singer-songwriter Hozier rose to fame after the release of his hit song "Take Me To Church" in 2013. The rise in fame led to increased interest in his dating life, with some believing that the musician was gay.
The rumors stemmed from the song's music video, which was seen as anti-Roman Catholic church and anti-homophobia. However, the singer has shown that he is not gay and was rumored to be dating actress Saoirse Ronan at one point.
Hozier is known to be very private and enjoys living in the shadows. Not much is known about his personal life, but the singer wishes he could be more anonymous.
Is Hozier Gay? The Singer Once Said He Doesn't Mind Speculation about His Sexuality
Hozier thinks people thought he was gay due to the anti-Roman Catholic church and anti-homophobia message in the video of his hit song, "Take Me To Church." The video, which has amassed over 700 million views since its release eight years ago, shows two men kissing.
A homophobic mob soon chases the men. Despite their best attempts to run away, the hostile group catches up and becomes violent. Many see this as a representation of the current status quo in many parts of the world; hence, the song's theme of enlightenment. Hozier commented on the rumors and music, saying:
“Yes, people do make that assumption (that I am gay), which is fine, but for me I don't think it’s the point, you know what I mean. It doesn't come into it what my sexual orientation is. Regardless of the sexual orientation behind a relationship, it is still a relationship and still love... So people are free to make any assumption they want, it's grand.”
Later, it was revealed that the Irish singer had written the song after a breakup with his girlfriend. Therefore, he is not gay but an advocate of gay rights and the LGBTQ+ community.
Hozier Sparked Dating Rumors with Actress Saoirse Ronan in the Past
In May 2017, Hozier made headlines as speculation about his romantic life took center stage. The musician was believed to be dating Ronan, Ed Sheeran's love interest on "Galway Gal," after they were spotted enjoying several "secret" but apparently, not-so-secret dates.
The pair had collaborated on the music video of "Chery Wine" the year before and became close during that time. The two were said to be hanging out since they wrapped up shooting and had been spotted several times in Dublin. A source told The Sun that the rumored pair enjoyed each other's company and made for a fantastic couple.
However, if they were together, it was probably a brief relationship as Saoirse Ronan was confirmed to have been dating her former co-star Jack Lowden since 2018. Although the pair have been very private about their relationship ever since, there is no doubt surrounding their relationship.

Ronan is quite a feature on-screen as she has appeared in films, television series, and music videos. She played a part in making "The Grand Budapest Hotel" alongside Willem Dafoe and Ralph Fiennes. Additionally, she portrayed the titular character Mary Stuart in "Mary Queen of Scots," featuring Margot Robbie.
Hozier Doesn't Talk Much about His Personal Life
Although his rise to fame is a beautiful blessing, Hozier is sometimes conflicted about his social status. He says sometimes it keeps him from doing the things he loves, for example, supporting a friend's show, as his presence may take the attention away from his less popular friend.
He added that he used to try and resist the baggage that came with being famous. However, he has learned to accept that it is his life now and must adapt to it.
Still, he noted that he enjoys and misses the feeling of anonymity. He explained, "Being in a bar, being in a pub, and just being part of a crowd is a really nice feeling."
Hozier is seen as an artist who enjoys being in the shadows and appreciating things from afar. He doesn't seem like someone who wants to be in the spotlight forever. His social media pages are mainly dedicated to his music and less about his private life.
