Smith has played some monumental roles despite his short resume, which only includes twelve films and television shows since he began his career in 2014. His most significant contribution is his 100-episode appearance as Edward Nygma in "Gotham" from 2014 to 2019.

He has played several characters with homosexual characteristics in "Transatlantic" and "1985." Smith came out as a gay man several years ago and has given references about his sexuality in various interviews. However, little is known about his romantic life, including who he is dating.

Cory Michael Smith Was Once Linked to 'Game of Thrones' Star Emilia Clarke

Smith reportedly had a fling with the Mother of Dragons, Clarke, in 2014. The pair was starring together on stage in the play "Breakfast at Tiffany's" on Broadway. Based on Truman Capote's classic novel, the show was Smith's first on the famed New York's Great White Way.

Smith played Fred, the man who was romantically after Clarke's character. Clarke, a popular performer at that point after her exploits as Daenerys Targaryen in the hit TV series, "Game of Thrones," was cast as Holly Golightly, a famous role from the 1961 film.

The couple is said to have attempted to continue their relationship after their time on Broadway. They accompanied each other to the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2014. Despite a source insisting that they were just friends, the pair were spotted holding hands and slow dancing during the party, which raised several eyebrows.

Cory Michael Smith Publicly Spoke about His Sexuality for the First Time in 2018

In 2018, the movie "1985" was released. It stars Smith as Adrian Lester, a gay man from Texas who spends much of his time in New York. The film follows Smith's character as he returns home to Dallas to visit his family one last time before succumbing to AIDS, something he doesn't want his family to know.

While speaking about the film, Smith took the opportunity to also talk about his life as a queer man. He said, "There's something special about telling a story that feels closer to home." The actor revealed that, like Lester, he had also been living away from his family for long periods, and his journeys to see his family felt similar in a way.

Smith is from Ohio but spent much of his adult life living in New York. He said he felt a similar fear when he had to come out to his family but is glad that they took it in with a lot of love. Going back to the movie, Smith noted:

“This story, a story about AIDS and stripping away politics, stripping away activism, stripping away the medical drama of it, what you're left with is something so personal about family and connecting with family and keeping secrets with family. It just overwhelmed me.”

Cory Michael Smith Keeps His Dating Life a Secret

Only a little information is available about Smith's private life. Since the rumors about his love affair with Emilia Clarke in 2014, the media has been starved of more juicy details about Smith's romantic life.

Since coming out, Smith has kept his cards close to his chest. Although he has spoken about his life as a queer man when discussing some of his on-screen characters on several occasions, he doesn't reveal anything beyond his similarities with them.

In April 2023, he spoke about Fry, the historical American journalist stationed in France, whom he portrays in Netflix's "Transatlantic" alongside Gillian Jacobs, saying he has a deep attachment to the character.

Although Fry was not all the way gay because he was married to two women and had three children with them, he had sexual activities with several men but did tell about their interactions himself. Smith doesn't make his romantic life public; even his social media doesn't give any hints about who he is dating.
