Matthew McConaughey Didn’t Speak to 91-Year-Old Mom for 8 Years & Now She Lives with Him: ‘We Went through It’

On May 11, 2023, Matthew McConaughey's wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, 41, and his mother, Kay McConaughey, took to Instagram Live to talk about the actor. Camila asked her mother-in-law to share something she'd told her son often when he was a child.

Kay revealed she had a question she often asked her three sons over the years: "Are you going to see the rose in the vase or the dust on the table?'"

Kay also revealed those words impacted Matthew so much that he found a way to immortalize them. The actor created a framed mirror bearing the question and kept it displayed in Kay's house for her to see every time she checked herself in the mirror.

Kay believes the message is inspiring and encouraged others, including Camila, to use it as a constant "thought of the day."

Matthew's wife shares a great bond with his mother as she often posts their joint videos on social media. On May 14, 2023—Mother's Day—the actor shared his wife's clip where Kay gave her advice and captioned it, "Listen to your mother."

Camila also honored her mother-in-law on the special day by sharing an Instagram post of them embracing and laughing.

Using the name "MaMac," which appeared to be her nickname for her mother-in-law, she said, "You… teach me daily for this (sic) last few years since moving in with us..." The star's wife hilariously noted how some of those lessons were outside her values, while some she needed and others didn't.

However, they were instructions she would carry forever. Camila also confessed to being constantly surprised by her mother-in-law before declaring her love and wishing Kay a Happy Mother's Day.

On January 8, 2023, Camila shared a clip of Kay, who had just celebrated her 91st birthday the previous day! Camila asked her for her words of wisdom, and Matthew's mother shared what she lived by and what got her to that age.

She started by urging people not to stress so much to avoid looking old and wrinkled. She also encouraged people to "eat clean," without too much candy or carbohydrates. Lastly, she recommended exercise—she does Pilates four times weekly for an hour each.

Things between Matthew, his wife, and his mother might be going great now, but that wasn't always the case. For starters, Kay wasn't always living with the couple. Then there was a period when she was estranged from her son.

The Distance That Used to Be between Matthew and Kay

In October 2020, during his appearance on "The Howard Stern Show," Matthew confessed to having been estranged from his mother for eight years in the past! He revealed he cut her off his life because she failed to keep their private conversations to herself.

Matthew shared that he was so disappointed when he learned Kay was talking to the media about their private chats. He cut her out of his life to set "some boundaries" because one minute he was speaking to her, and then three days later, some paper had the scoop.

Matthew revealed he took that harsh step against his mother when he discovered she had given a televised tour of his childhood home and revealed intimate details about his personal life, including showing the public the bed where her son "lost his virginity."

A friend of Matthew's alerted him to the interview, and when he called to confront her, she just said she didn't anticipate him finding out.

Despite the betrayal, the star still saw her as his mother but one who had become different. He acknowledged that no one was perfect, and the bond she had with him was a type of relationship that she'd never had before.

The actor admitted that the time apart from his mother was "tough" for them. Luckily, time healed their rift, and he managed to forgive his mother. The eight years they were estranged was difficult, but he said, "We went through it," and now they'd come out good on the other side.

Things were so much better for the pair that Kay got to quarantine with her son, his wife, and their three children, Levi, Vida, and Livingston. It wasn't clear when exactly Matthew's mother moved in with his family, but it seems she quarantined with them and just never left.

The mother-son pair went from not speaking or seeing each other to coming across one another daily. Now that the bitterness of the past is gone, Matthew could focus more on being the ideal husband and family man.

How Matthew Ended Up Marrying Camila and His Role as a Father

When Matthew asked Camila to marry him, they were already in a five-year relationship. The Oscar Award-winner only proposed after he and his wife were already parents to Levi and his little sister Vida.

In 2011, Levi, then three, instigated his parents' marriage when he asked the actor why his mother's last name wasn't the same as everyone else in the family. The celebrity explained to the child that they weren't married yet, and little Levi asked, "Why not?"

Matthew tried explaining that he wanted to marry Camila but didn't need to, and his son questioned if he was perhaps afraid. The "Greenlights" author admitted that he might've been a "little bit" scared, and when asked what of, he said of losing himself.

That was the same time Camila presented Matthew with an ultrasound photo, revealing she was pregnant for the third time.
