Jermaine Fowler drew his first breath in Washington, DC, on May 16, 1988, born to youngsters who adopted a relaxed approach to parenting. He grew up in Hyattsville, Maryland, alongside two siblings, one of whom is his fraternal twin.

Fowler joined the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian and later transitioned into acting. His first few onscreen appearances were in "The Six," "Jest Originals," "In Living Color," and "The Eric Andre Show."

He climbed the Hollywood ladder, transmuting his comic prowess into his roles and voicing animated characters. Today, he is chiefly recognized for his appearance in "Sorry to Bother You," with Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, and Steve Yeun.

Fowler also starred in "Coming 2 America" with Eddie Murphy, who inspired his career path, "Judas and The Black Messiah" with Daniel Kaluuya and Ashton Sanders, and 2022's "The Drop."

His 2023 projects include the comedy film "Late Bloomers" and "Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur." Still, despite his success speaking for itself, his personal life has had ups and downs.

Jermaine Fowler's Parents and Siblings: The Actor Suffered a Painful Family Loss That Made Him Quit Comedy for Some Time

Fowler was in the eleventh grade when it clicked that he wanted to do comedy. A neighbor had lent him a VHS tape of Murphy's 1987 stand-up special "Raw," and he watched it religiously. He initially wanted to start with acting but used stand-up to catapult him into film and TV.

His parents were teenagers when they welcomed him. Despite their laid-back parenting style, he noted that raising a family that young was a learning experience for them all.

He admitted that things weren't always the best, and his family dynamic influenced his choice to do comedy. "The kids were always in between the parents, so I think that's why I became a comedian, because I always wanted to ease tension with people," he explained.

Fowler sourced much of his stand-up material from the lived experiences that included his loved ones. Hence, it wasn't easy to keep doing stand-up gigs once those loved ones were gone. He lost his mother to breast cancer in 2017.

His close friend and partner, Kevin Barnett, also passed the following year. It was a devastating double blow that led to suicidal thoughts because he was ready to quit everything. He left the stand-up scene for some time but gradually returned to it after his therapist put things into perspective.
