Titan Sub Explorer’s Family Emotionally Speaks Up after Tragically Losing ‘Dedicated’ Dad
- Official statements confirm the death of the five people aboard the Titan submersible four days after it went missing.
- Among the five people was the British billionaire Hamish Harding, who often went on adventurous expeditions and had set three world records.
- After receiving the devastating news of his death, Harding's family released an official statement to pay a heartfelt tribute to the loving dad of four.
A tragic update regarding the deep-sea submersible Titan has surfaced four days after it lost contact with its surface support ship, Polar Prince, in the North Atlantic.
What started as a thrilling adventure to see the wreck of the famous Titanic sitting 12,500 feet underwater eventually turned into a nightmare for the five people aboard the Titan. The voyage began as planned but went missing one hour and 45 minutes after diving into the ocean.
The submersible lost contact on Sunday morning, beginning a search that involved personnel and resources from US, Canada, England, and France. The investigation ended on Thursday as official statements regarding the sub were released.
The US-based company OceanGate Expeditions led the Titan voyage and confirmed that all five passengers aboard died after the vessel imploded underwater.
The Rear Admiral of the US Coast Guard, John Mauger, also released a statement confirming the unfortunate incident. He stated, "The debris is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber."
Upon finding the remains of the Titan, the authorities informed the families of the people aboard the 22-foot-long vessel. The CEO of OceanGate, Stockton Rush, was also one of the five people who reportedly experienced instant death.
The other people who lost their lives in the horrifying incident include a 58-year-old British businessman, Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood, a 48-year-old British-Pakistani businessman, his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood, and the famous explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who wasn't visiting the Titanic wreckage for the first time.
While expressing condolences to the families of the late voyagers, OceanGate called these five people "true explorers" who were passionate about "exploring and protecting the world's oceans."
How Did Hamish Harding Dedicate Life to Science and His Big Family?
The British billionaire Harding, who has set three Guinness World Records, updated his friends and family on Facebook before embarking on the deep-sea adventure that claimed his life. He wrote:
"I am proud to finally announce that I joined OceanGate Expeditions for their RMS TITANIC Mission as a mission specialist on the sub going down to the Titanic."
He added that the weather conditions in Newfoundland, Canada, only allowed them to go underwater at this point of the year and said that this would probably be the only voyage to the Titanic wreckage this year.
Harding, who would have celebrated his birthday this weekend, said he would keep everyone updated about his adventure, but fate did not allow him to write another Facebook post.
The billionaire, who owned an aircraft company called Action Aviation in the United Arab Emirates, shared a message with the ex-NASA astronaut, Colonel Terry Virts, saying:
"Hey, we're headed out tomorrow. It looks good. The weather's been bad, so they've been waiting for this."
Virts talked about Harding's message on UK's breakfast show, "Good Morning Britain," stating that the adventure-lover was aware of the "risks" involved in the mission.
This wasn't the first time Harding went on an underwater expedition. In 2021, he spent four hours and 15 mins in the deepest place on earth, the Mariana Trench, setting two world records―the greatest distance covered and the longest time spent there.
He made a third world record when he embarked on an exciting space exploration journey and did the fastest circumnavigation of the earth. Besides these adventures, Harding has been to the South Pole twice.
Contrary to what people do as they age, Harding loved doing "unusual" things. He loved adventures and even took his son, Giles, along many times. Besides Giles, Harding shares another boy, Rory, with his wife, Linda. He also fathered two of Linda's children, a daughter, Lauren, and Brain, her son with autism.
How Do Hamish Harding's Wife and 4 Kids Feel after His Death?
Like the families of Harding's late fellow explorers, Linda and her four children felt devastated upon learning about his death. They paid a touching tribute to the late "dedicated father" by releasing an official statement.
Harding's family described him as "one of a kind" and said he "lived his life" for three things―his family, his work, and his love for adventure. They praised his achievements and revealed one thing about his demise that gave them a little comfort:
"We lost him doing what he loved."
In their statement, Harding's family said his untimely death left a "gap" that "could never be filled," and they sympathized with the grieving families of the other four people aboard the Titan.
In the end, they thanked everyone involved in the search operation and said Harding would have felt glad to see how everyone got united after the sub went missing.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all five people who lost their lives in this tragic incident.
