Cillian Murphy Lost Weight for 'Oppenheimer' but Does Not 'Advise' His Method

Cillian Murphy took extreme measures to lose weight for his role in "Oppenheimer." While he doesn't recommend his restrictive diet, he was happy with the film's outcome.

As an actor dedicated to his craft, Cillian Murphy had to go through extreme measures to lose weight for his role in "Oppenheimer."

The "Peaky Blinders" star disclosed what went on behind the scenes to aid his weight loss, such as skipping meals amidst busy schedules.

Admittedly, not eating came easily, as the time would go by without him noticing. "I was running on crazy energy; I went over a threshold to where I was not worrying about food or anything," he said. He also wanted to nail the role by eating as little as possible. He added:

"You become competitive with yourself a little bit which is not healthy. I don't advise it."

Murphy did not detail how much weight he lost or what food he cut from his diet. Whatever it was, it worked, and the actor was satisfied with the results of his role. Interestingly, Murphy likes playing complex characters, particularly those that aren't dull.

Murphy also enjoys a good script that tackles all corners of the human condition through complicated scenes. Fortunately, Christopher Nolan's films are precisely that.

Admittedly, Murphy felt pressure starring in such a production that is held in high regard. However, as Nolan was writing the script, Murphy was the only actor who came to mind for the character. He said:

"I try not to think of actors as I write, but Cillian's eyes were the only eyes I know that can project that intensity."

"Oppenheimer" will hit theaters the same day as the highly anticipated "Barbie" film, and Murphy said he would undoubtedly watch "Barbie."

Behind the scenes, Cillian Murphy has a supportive family. He has been married to Yvonne McGuinness since 2004. Together they have two kids, Malachy Murphy and Aran Murphy.
