In Ryan's extensive tribute dedicated to the cultural icon, he included a back story of how outsiders kept him from seeing the animal rights activist who had no funeral. His post started by expressing gratitude to loved ones and fans who sent their condolences for his loss. He then went on to detail the legacy Doris left behind with her philanthropic endeavors and illustrious career.
Ryan also spoke about how instrumental and influential Doris was in encouraging his late dad, Terry Melcher, to pursue a music career. He shared and described some notable childhood moments where he and his family spent a lot of time with his grandma, who ensured that he felt her love while instilling him with confidence and drive.
However, the story then took a tragic turn. It started revealing the ways in which Ryan sadly lost contact with Doris due to manipulation from external forces, who would not allow him access to his grandmother or any information to do with her.
When he was still a child, Ryan was cast in the middle of his parents' divorce, which was then used in different ways as an excuse to keep him away from Doris. He recalled a moment in 2004 when he was scheduled to have dinner with his grandma but was thwarted by her manager:
"...the dinner between my grandma and I never took place. Any and all communication was cut off from that point on, and I was left bewildered..."

Ryan later learned that Doris' manager had cut ties with all the longstanding board members of his grandmother's foundation and appointed his direct family members as the new board members. As a result of worrying he may cause more emotional distress for Doris, whose mind had begun to slip in old age, Ryan did not attempt to reach out.
In his statement, he also related the situation with his late grandma to a similar ordeal that happened with his late dad. According to Ryan, during his father's last few days, his wife (the one he married after divorcing Ryan's mom) kept Ryan away from his dad and got him to change his will.
Ryan shared his sad family story to inspire others going through similar situations to avoid delay in reaching out and trying to reconnect to fix strained relationships. Though he has been through some devastating times, he fortunately found love with his beloved wife.
