‘Xena: Warrior Princess’s Lucy Lawless Opens up about Her 2 Children’s Journey with Irlen Syndrome

Lucy Lawless is a proud mother of three from different marriages. She and her family have endured a challenging experience with two of her kids, but the family has beat the odds, and she revealed how.
Lucy is best known for the 1995 adventure television series, "Xena: Warrior Princess," which ran for six seasons until 2001. She starred alongside Renee 'O Connor and Kevin Smith.

She reunited with O'Connor while filming season two of the police-comedy drama "My Life Is Murder" (2019). Two years later, there were reports that the iconic TV fantasy show "Xena" could be revived.
In a September 2021 interview, Lucy was asked whether she and O'Connor discussed the reboot and if she would appear in a cameo. She replied:
"We might have said that. I can't remember. It's not top of mind to speak of, because people have been mooting this for years, and we're sort of just fatigued by the whole discussion."

The actress and producer also starred in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," from 1995 until 1999, as the TV show aired for six seasons. Lawless appeared alongside Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hurst series.
During the duration of both television shows, the New Zealand native married her first husband, Garth Lawless, in 1988, and that same year, the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Daisy Lawless. However, after being married for several years, they divorced in 1995.

Three years later, Lucy wed her second husband, film producer Rob Tapert, in March 1998. The lovebirds welcomed two sons, Julius, in October 1999 and Judah, in May 2002.
In October 2014, the mother of three revealed two of her children have Irlen Syndrome and explained, "If it's not diagnosed, then it's a learning disability. If it is diagnosed and you learn how to work with it, it is kind of an advantage in a lot of ways, I think."

The TV star divulged that the first thing she noticed about one of her sons was that "he would always read books upside down." It became an issue when he had to go to school, as she further explained:
"When he went to school, he was tested, and they were displeased with him. They didn't want him at their school because he didn't fit into their strict criteria of readiness for school."

Lucy said she and her spouse knew that the people from school had a problem and not their son. Either way, her child underwent Irlen screening, and she disclosed the results.
"Well, the difference was immediate, the diagnostician opened up the Venetian blinds and said look across that roof, across the road, and he said, 'Gosh the tiles aren't moving,'" Lucy recounted at the time.
The proud parent shared that her son can now read anything with glasses and does not act up when he is supposed to read. Moreover, he has been taught to type and does it exceptionally well.She added that she has high hopes for her son's future:
"He's going to be something."

After being married twice and starting a family, Lucy is now 55 years old and still looks as beautiful as ever. In August 2018, she posted a makeup-free selfie on her Instagram, and fans raved about her beauty.
"Great picture, you look amazing," wrote one fan in the comments section. "Still gorgeous!!!!" another Instagram follower exclaimed.
Someone else complimented Lucy on her eyes, writing, "Beautiful with those blue eyes," while another social media user penned, "You look so beautiful, my goddess."
Lucy, who starred in "Bedtime Stories" alongside Adam Sandler and Russell Brand, is also a philanthropist. She describes herself as an "Eco-Warrior" on her website, where she penned that she wants to be responsible enough for the planet to avoid global warming for the sake of future generations.
