Heche met Steve Martin on the production of "A Simple Twist of Fate." In her book, "Call Me Crazy," she detailed how she saw Martin and thought he was "magical."
They eventually became a couple and dated despite him being 24 years older. However, their relationship did not last. Heche later revealed the reason they broke up had nothing to do with the actor. She said:
"Why did we break up? [There] wasn't anything wrong with Steve. It was just that it was not what I wanted to commit my life to."

Ellen DeGeneres
One of Heche's most-known relationships was with Ellen DeGeneres, whom she met at Vanity Fair's post-Academy Awards party. The "Six Days, Seven Nights" star was instantly attracted to the talk show host.
Although she rarely saw DeGeneres on television, Heche was already blinded by her feelings. Unfortunately, their relationship faced a series of ups and downs. There was also a rumor that they were pregnant, which baffled Heche with the thought that people cared so much about it.

The pair remained a couple from 1997 to 2000. After their relationship ended, Heche revealed her same-sex romance with DeGeneres affected her career in Hollywood. She recalled:
"I didn't do a studio picture for ten years. I was fired from a $10 million picture deal and did not see the light of day in a studio picture."
Despite the challenges she reportedly faced because of their relationship, Heche remains proud of her role in societal norms, especially in accepting all kinds of romances.

Coleman 'Coley' Laffoon
After her relationship with DeGeneres, Heche fell in love and married her cameraman, Coleman "Coley" Laffoon, in 2001. They share a son, Homer. Unfortunately, the couple separated in 2007 and had their divorce finalized in 2009.
Heche had to pay $3,700 a month in child support and a $500,000 lump sum, among other things. Their divorce was reportedly due to irreconcilable differences.
Following her passing in 2022, Laffoon paid tribute to his ex-wife on Instagram and shared how the news saddened him. Nevertheless, he remains a committed father to their son.
James Tupper
After her marriage ended, Heche fell in love with her "Men In Trees" co-star, James Tupper. Their relationship lasted several years and resulted in a son, Atlas. Despite their commitment to each other, Heche and Tupper did not tie the knot.
"I've been married before, and so has he. I don't know what either of us would gain or what would change that would benefit us," she said. After over a decade together, Heche and Tupper called it quits. They released a joint statement about their separation and planned to co-parent their son.
