Carrey's role in "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" is especially notable, as he portrays not only the eccentric Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik but also Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Eggman's grandfather. This dual portrayal adds a layer of intrigue and complexity to the story, with Carrey's signature talent ensuring an unforgettable performance.

Carrey has been a central figure in the action-adventure comedy saga since its inception, having played Dr. Robotnik in the first two films, released in 2020 and 2022.

The "Dumb and Dumber" actor's witty charm was on full display during the "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" premiere, as he spoke candidly about his decision to return to the franchise. Known for his larger-than-life persona both on and off screen, Carrey surprised fans with a humorous explanation for his return to acting.

Speaking to a journalist at the premiere, he joked, "I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly. Yeah." When asked if the script matched his prior statement about needing "gold ink written by angels" to come out of retirement, the actor laughed, admitting, "That might have been hyperbole, but, yeah. You know, I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius. Which is a bit of a stretch."

This lighthearted response comes nearly two years after Carrey announced his potential retirement in an April 2022 interview with Access Hollywood. At the time, he shared his deep appreciation for a quieter life, saying, "I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life."

Reflecting on his career, Carrey said, "I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough."

When asked in 2022 if he would ever take on another role, Carrey shared, "If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might. I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break."

His return to "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," while perhaps less celestial than originally stated, certainly brings excitement to fans of the series.

Carrey's contributions to the "Sonic" franchise were further acknowledged by his co-stars in a behind-the-scenes featurette released ahead of the premiere.

Reeves, who voices Shadow in the new film, declared, "Jim Carrey is a genius." Elba echoed the sentiment, adding, "He's so inventive." Schwartz, the voice of Sonic, described him as a "mastermind," while Marsden praised Carrey as "the greatest thing in the world."

In typical Jim Carrey fashion, the "Bruce Almighty" alum added a comedic flair to his reflections on the movie. "When they told me I was gonna play two Robotniks, I was delighted. Until I realized I was doing twice the work for the same pay."
